Comfort Sucking?

Besides sticking a bottle in his mouth and seeing if he eats, are there any signs to look for to determine the difference between wanting to eat and wanting to comfort suck?

I don't like wasting formula and I hate wasting the breast milk I manage to pump...

What alreeves said.  If he won't take the paci and is still fussy, then feed him.

My son likes to comfort suck too so I will give him a pacifier and he has now learned to spit it out when he is hungry.
