3rd Trimester

Oh why did I do this???

Since my DH and I have decided to have our DS circumcised once he is born, I decided to youtube a video of it.  I have never seen one done, and I figured, "Well, if I'm choosing this for my DS, I should at least know how it is done, right?"  Oh man.  The video I found on youtube, while very informative, had the baby crying the whole time.  It just broke my heart!!  All I wanted to do was hold the poor thing and keep him from being snipped.  Now all I can think about is how our DS is going to react to his circumcision.  Sad  Should I be there to watch the circumcision as support for my DS?  I'm afraid that if I get upset it will upset him more.  Would you guys watch or opt out on the viewing of it?

Note: I will probably have someone flame me for even choosing circumcision, but after speaking with my DH and doctors, we are still going to have it done.  So please don't try to convince me otherwise.  TIA!

  • I'm having a girl so I probably shouldn't even answer this. If I were having a boy I don't think I could be in the room while they did it.

  • I didn't know that you had a choice to watch it. I wouldn't. It's just gonna make you crazy. GL

This.  I would definitely make my DH be the strong one and be with the baby so I wouldn't have to.  I'm dreading being in the same room when she has to have her foot pricked!

  • I asked my H if he would have been mad at his parents if they had not had him circumcised. He said "I'm sure it hurt really bad, but I can't remember it and I'd pissed if they hadn't." lol I wouldn't want to be in the room personally...

  • Ooooh that's a toughy... I'm having a girl, so I haven't really thought about it, but I know if we were having a boy we'd be getting him circumsized. I think DH might be in there with him, I probably would do it too, and just suck it up, but it would be so hard.

  • If we have a boy we are definately getting it done as well so you're not alone, I just know now not watch, I don't think I would want to anyway but still.

  • hey, if you want to have your son's genitals mutilated, far be it from me to convince you otherwise.
  • Yikes on the video, I definitely won't be watching that.  I am having my DS circumcised also.  I pass out at the sight of blood, injuries, etc. that aren't my own, so DH is going to stay with LO while he is having it done.  When my brother had his son's done, they told him at the hospital they couldn't come, but my husband is insisting on being there with him.

  • I don't know about where your from but here your not allowed to be with the baby while it's being circumcised.  However I was only in the next room and I could hear the whole thing.  I heard him let out a little squeal and that was it.  I don't know what method you watched on Youtube but here they use the Plastibel method.  I have had 2 of my sons circumcised and the first went well and the second was a little more complicated.  My DH was circumcised when he was 25 and he said the whole thing was horrible and he insists on our 3rd boy being circumcised despite the complications the second one had.  My DH has been both non circumcised and circumscised and says that he chooses the second hands down.  It is a very personal decision and only a extremely ignorant person would flame your decision.
  • Hmmm...maybe I can convince DH to be there for DS.  Good advice ladies!  Thanks!

  • There are 2 different methods to circumcision now. One is the usual where they cut it and its done.  The other is called the plasti-bell method.  They put the penis in this plastic contraption and the tie the foreskin to it,still have to cut it some but kinda like the umbilical cord it just falls off when its done.  Takes a few days and its over. One of the nurses was describing it to us and they told us to go the plasti-bell route. Said it makes the area look pretty much perfect.

Keep in mind that the Plasti-Bell method is not fool proof.  My sons was botched by a doctor who has done thousands of them.....just happens sometimes.

  • Well, my hospital does both methods.  Our pediatrician said depending on who is on call that day of the birth will determine if DS goes the plast-bell method.  But I really like the idea of the plasti-bell method.  I've heard that it is easier to care for afterwards.

  • I had no idea there were different methods, I will look into this. Although we wont know gender until delivery so I might not even have to worry about it.

Aw thank you :)  Those are my 3 kids from my previous marriage.  This is going to be DH and I first baby together (and last lol) 4 kids is enough for me.  DH is adopted and has no known biological family so he is super excited to be having a baby, though he says he can't imagine loving his own more than he loves my 3.........he's the best :)

  • We are having a boy, and will also be getting him circumcised.  As I understand though, we are not allowed to be in the room while it is getting done.

Thanks for the information on the different methods, I was not aware of them!

Yup, this.  I just sent you a PM, btacoma...

Okay dumbass - educate yourself. This is not mutilation. It is simply the removal of the foreskin. The penis is no shorter than it was before. It loses no function. It is cleaner. There are even strain of HIV known to thrive in the foreskin environment.

You want to see a suffering baby? Look at one who got an infection of the foreskin from playing in a sandbox and needed to be circumcised ANYWAY to remedy the situation after his little penis blew up like a grapefruit. It's a MUCH more complicated surgery as the baby grows. It's major surgery as a man.

Female circumcision, practiced in some 3rd world countries by certain religious sects, IS mutilation.

I personally would never have married an uncircumcised man because I consider them filthy. Many a girlfriend has gotten a bladder infection from a jerk who forgot to wash off his smegma (cheesy penile discharge that collects in the foreskin) before sex.

  • You're doing the right thing hon. They will give him some local anesthetic, and it will be over quick as a flash with a skilled doctor. He will cry, but he will never remember it and with be glad he had it done some day :) Besides, it's nothing compared to what he did to your privates on his way out! LOL! (kidding, not trying to be vindictive to babies :) Just lots of cuddles and kisses from Mommy later - he'll be all good :)

My friend couldn't watch her baby be done yesterday - it made her cry, but of course what new Mommy wants to see her baby hurt? My mom cried through every circumcision, and she had three boys!

Good for you for sticking to your guns.

Sorry, not done with you yet. Just though of something else to add. All Jews (and Muslims) circumcise. It's a sacred religious and cultural  ritual for them. Why don't you flame all the Jewish ladies on this board, then? Have yourself a little blog-holocaust?

  • We're Jewish - and living in Israel - so our son will most certainly be circumcised.

I have been to several circumcisions before, and I am actually surprised to hear that the baby in the video you watched was crying so much. In my experience, they cry for a few minutes and then that's it.

Anyway, in terms of your question, I've been to circumcisions when the mother stayed and watched and where the mother actually left the room. Personally, I don't believe that it is that traumatic to the baby (OK, go ahead and flame me!), and I will watch. However, you have to do what you are comfortable with.
