breastfeeding a baby with cleft lip...any advice?

Re: breastfeeding a baby with cleft lip

  • I would definitely work with a LC.  We took our LO to an oral therapist for some latch issues at the suggestion of our LC.  They worked with a lot of babies with cleft palates and lips so maybe that's something to keep in mind as well.  GL!

  • My oldest was born with a cleft lip/palate.  Is the baby born yet?  If it is just a cleft lip, breastfeeding is very possible (a laction consultant should be able to help).

My oldest was born with both, so he had no suction due to the cleft palate, so he could not nurse.  But I pumped & provided breast milk in a bottle.

I would be happy to answer any questions!
