Babies: 0 - 3 Months

So Which Is It?

I had always heard FF babies were more likely to plump up bc of the higher fat content in formula...

But then a few people said they heard the opposite, that BM is higher in fat and had the tendency for babies to gain faster.

I EBF, and I will continue to do so regardless of whatever the verdict is...

I'm just curious ;)

TIA!?

Re: So Which Is It?

  • Both my girls plumped up like crazy and I exclusively BF

Adriana didn't gain quite as fast as Isabella is but they were both in the 90th percentiles for weight.

  • Pedi told me that FF babies tend to gain a little slower, which for us has been true so far. I'm sure it depends a lot on the child though.

  • My Pedi said that BF babies gain more during the first few months related to the fat in the milk then around 5/6 months FF babies gain more. He said that at about that time FF babies tend to gain more because they are more likely to finish an entire bottle whether or not they are hungry. BF babies just quit when they're done.

This, and BF babies have "no problem gaining weight."

  • For the first three months, BF babies will gain more than FF babies because they digest the breastmilk quicker and eat more than formula babies.

After 3 months, bf babies weight gain starts to settle and by 6 months formula babies gain more than bf babies.

  • Just my own personal theory, but I wonder if BF babies are also more likely to nurse for comfort, espcially early on before they get interested in the world around them. I know my DD has nursed when she was upset during her colic-type fits even though I'm pretty sure she wasn't hungry.
