How did you handle income during maternity leave?

My company is under 50 employees but will grant a leave of absence up to 60 days with 30 day extensions (although it doesn't specify qualifications for an extension). I can use any of my available PTO during that period and it also seems that I can get benefits from NJ. Since I can probably only take 12 weeks away from work, I am thinking I will try to work until delivery, do the 6 weeks of disability benefits, then 6 weeks Family Leave Insurance benefits. Does this make sense? I think this is the best I will be able to do but I'm still trying to wrap my head around all this.

  • I'm really confused by all this myself. Mostly because I don't know what is specific to my company vs a NJ thing. My disability (which I think is through my company) starts 2 weeks before my due date and ends 6 weeks after the birth date (regardless of whether the baby is born super early or super late). Then we get a few weeks of paid leave, then unpaid leave. We can use our PTO as well. The only thing I was told about the order of things is that obviously disability comes first, and the paid leave and unpaid leave have to be back to back, so any PTO should be before or after. Also we have to be careful and make sure we use up any PTO now if it doesn't roll over into the following year, otherwise we'll lose it.
