My grandmother was Nellie and I like Nell. Thoughts on it? I'm not totally sold on it but it meets our criteria...short, not over used, etc. Our last name is long so one syllable names work well. What are some names that could be used so Nell is the nickname?

First off, I'm so excited to see someone else considering using Nell! Nellie was my great-aunt's name as well as several other family members and I absolutely adore it! I've personally never seen it used as a NN - it's always been stand-alone.
Just something to think about - if you go with a different name and use Nell as a NN it's highly likely that other people may call the child a different nickname that is more common (i.e. For Eleanor, she may be called "Elle" or "Ella", Penelope could be be called "Penny"). If you're set that you want to call her Nell, I see no issue with just making that her stand-alone name. Also, according to Behind the Name, it's been used as stand-alone name since Medieval times, so it does not have to be tied to different name.
We're using Willa for our daughter and while it is a NN for Wilhelmina, I don't want her being called "Mina", I want her called Willa. So, we're naming her Willa since that is what she will be called.
