Re: May IUI

I had my first IUI in March and planned on another in April but my RE found a rather large cyst on my ovary and decided to cancel my cycle monitoring for April and put me on BCP for the month.  He said we can try for our second IUI in May once the cyst has cleared.

I decided to distract myself by making plans to meet friends for lunch and planning a road trip to meet up with some family who live 8 hours away.  Hoping that it will help pass the month of April for me!

  • @pmjb we are in the same situation, but I am on BC for only 2 weeks.  I go in Monday for a check up, but am preparing to finish out the month on BC and start back in May.

It's devastating to get your BFN and AF, and then get hit that you can't get started right away again. This whole process is just so much, I praise and acknowledge all the women who are going through this journey.

I will be doing my 3rd IUI in May.  Our plan was to move straight to IVF after our 2nd IUI failed but then I found out I will likely qualify for a clinical trial that I'm not eligible for until June.  Since that will save us a lot of $$$ (we have no insurance coverage for IVF), we are waiting and doing one more IUI in the meantime.

    Month/Cycle: 3rd IUI cycle

CD or DPO: Today is CD 17.  I don't know what DPO because I'm not tracking but I usually ovulate CD 13 or 14.

WAYDTGKU: Just waiting for AF so I can go in for baseline ultrasound and start injectables CD 3 like my previous 2 IUI cycles.

IUI date: My best guess is May 5 or 6 based on my typical cycle and how I've responded to the injectables the previous two times.  Both times I triggered on CD 9 and had my IUI on CD 11.

Testing: Will do HPT on 14dpiui if I don't have AF by then.  I never made it to testing the previous two times because I started AF on 13dpiui.

Any suggestions of how you distract yourself or make the most of TTC or TWW?  I knit and crochet.  It brings me peace! :)

GOOD LUCK to everyone doing May IUIs!!!

    Hi all,

I'm back on this board- after a surprise BFP which unfortunately ended in a loss in February, I have finally been cleared. I had a hysteroscopy this week and my RE gave me the green light to do an IUI with my next cycle in May which I am guessing will be mid-May. Until then I'm healing from my procedure and gearing my body up for what's next.
CD: My RE told me to consider this CD 1 but will wait till next cycle to do IUI
    Date of IUI: Mid May?
Testing: My RE office does a beta 14 days post IUI
Suggestions to distract: Exercise, and cooking and keeping busy with work.

    Good luck everyone :)

  • @pmjb and @MMD1986 same thing here, went in for my baseline after my March IUI and had one or two cysts and went on BCP. I took this time to go on a little cruise with DH. We got back today and I have one week left of BCP. I have been spotting on and off since Monday, my re has me on an estrogen/progesterone mixed pill and I read it can cause spotting. I was not expecting it though exp while on vacation.
  • @roxgibbons I'm so excited to see you here, that you've been cleared to go!!  Looks like we'll be cycle buddies :)  I'm definitely holding out hope for you.  Your strength amazes me.  Again, so sorry for your loss, girl.

My meds arrived in the mail today for IUI #3.  Is it weird that I get excited when this happens?  I ordered full refills of everything even though I already had some left over.  Hoping to be able to save some for IVF if I need to, since my insurance won't cover it then.  In total, I have 11 cartridges of follistim (300iu in each), 6 ganirelix injections, an ovidrel trigger shot, and about 32 progesterone suppositories.  You'd think I was selling!

  • Hello ladies, I haven't really posted here before, so here's my rundown:
    1. I've on cycle 14 of unsuccessful procreation
    2. All my testing as well as DHs has come back normal
    3. I have had irregular LP spotting for several months, which does improve with progesterone (although my progesterone is WNL)
    4. In March I was supposed to do my first IUI but 2 large cysts were discovered and I had to cancel and be put on BCP for a month.
    5. In April I began clomid and started preparing for IUI. Today I found out I haven't stimulated with clomid and we cancelled the IUI. (Only one 12.5 mm follie and one 10 mm on CD 12)

Now im just doing TI and waiting until my next cycle starts to begin Femara and monitoring again. I'm frustrated that it will have taken (fx) 3 cycles to even do any real treatment, but alas I have no choice!

Oh and FTR, I do ovulate on my own. So I'm super bummed the clomid didn't do anything. :( Looking forward to getting to know you ladies better.

  • @paigeed sorry you are here but hopefully May is your month! I totally understand the frustration with waiting to even start treatment. The waiting might be one of the worst parts about all of this. Fingers crossed for you that you'll get to do an IUI this month.
  • Welcome @paigeed, I hope your change in meds will do the trick for you.  A lot of times it takes a few cycles to find the right meds since everyone responds differently.  I hope that May will be your month!

How do they prevent you from ovulating immature eggs? If this is my problem all along then I really am at a loss for how to solve it.

  • Hi @paigeed !

IUI #2 didn't work. We will be doing IUI#3 this cycle. I'm calling the RE soon to get the next IUI started. Based on previous O dates I expect the IUI will be sometime between April 30 - May 4.
  • @paigeed My doctor prescribes me ganirelix injections to keep me from ovulating early.  For my last IUI he had me take it on CD 7 and 8 in addition to follistim because my follicles were growing fast.  Ganirelix is frequently used in IVF too since they want you to produce so many follicles and to keep the eggs in there until your retrieval.   I'm sure your doctor will find the right medication for you to produce a couple good follies!!

@LadyMillil I'm sorry your 2nd IUI didn't work.  Looks like our 3rd IUIs will be right around the same time.  Hoping 3rd time's a charm for us both! :)

  • @LadyMillil so sorry about iui 2, I hope #3 is your lucky number!
@paigeed I haven't ovulated on my own in the past yr+ since been off BCP so I use a trigger shot. My RE does do estrogen testing each US though which helps I guess monitor you. I would ask your RE if maybe they can add that into your apt.
  • @ale9687 My charts show that I do ovulate, but now I'm thinking I may just be release immature eggs. I also have very minimal CM during the month. So I was thinking I would call back tomorrow and ask about estrogen and how to monitor that because I'm thinking if we monitor it right away next cycle that they may be able to correct it and not have to wait another whole cycle. Thanks for the advice!

  • @wifeinraleigh28 when I get  AF I will call and most likely start letrozale again. I responded well to it the last two times so I'm guessing they will keep me on the same CD 3-8 protocol. My RE had originally thought he could squeeze an IUI this month but since my hysteroscopy was more invasive then expected, he wants to wait till the May cycle. I'm ok with that. Three procedures in the last 8 weeks has been plenty so I could use a break.

  • Here I am!

I am still an IUI virgin. We didn't end up going through this month as I wasn't responding enough to the Femara 2.5mg. Next cycle we are bumping that up so hopefully we see some more big beautiful follies.

I lost it on the phone to DH this morning becuase of all the irrational things you do when you're on this stupid rollercoaster - what's my due date? when i can i test (mothers day)? etc. But I'm good now, have a delicious iced coffee and am planning an amazing dinner for later.

Big fistbump to all my May IUI gals!

  • @madasm0530 welcome! Hopefully your next round will go much smoother and you'll be able to do your IUI. My re has me starting on 5mg but I was also on 150mg clomid last month and only had 1 folli after two weeks of it. Hopefully the higher dose is what you need.

@madasm0530- welcome and good luck to you on your next IUI. Infertility and all the bullshit that goes with it is just too much sometimes. I have definitely had my share of meltdowns.
I was on 2.5 mg on both my IUIs. I'm interested to see how I respond on this next one as I haven't had an IUI since November. I'm guessing my RE will start me out on the same dose this next round.

  • Month/Cycle: 7 TTCAL

    CD or DPO: CD 2

WAYDTGKU: We are lined up for our first IUI this cycle. I start 100 mg Clomid (3-7) > Ovidrel > CD 10 BW/ultrasound and IUI. Or at least I hope it goes down like that...

IUI Date: I'm going to guess it will be Saturday AM or Monday. In limbo between two months!

Testing: I like to think I'd wait for beta? I'm not an early tester generally.

Any suggestions of how you distract yourself or make the most of TTC or TWW? I find work is my biggest distraction. I am a social worker, so I obviously am fixated on other people while i'm at work, which I find helps a lot. I also do a book club, give myself projects around the house and binge watch Netflix/Amazon Prime shows with DH to occupy my nights.

I'm hopping over from the April IUI thread.  I've been lurking here, hoping I wouldn't have to join the party, but here I am!

    Month/Cycle:
    2nd IUI cycle

    CD or DPO: cd1

WAYDTGKU: letrozole 2.5mg cd3-7; meeting for the first time with a RE on CD 7, hoping he will take over the IUI cycle from my local OB who performed IUI#1

IUI Date: guessing 5/5 or 5/6

Testing: I love to POAS, what can I say!  I'll probably test 9 or 10 dpo, whatever falls on a weekend.  We've got a long scheduled vacation to Prague, Budapest & Vienna starting on May 18th (cd28), so I'll do plenty of testing before we go.

Any suggestions of how you distract yourself or make the most of TTC or TWW? I'm planning to do lots of vacation planning and looking forward to 2 weeks off of work while we celebrate our 8th anniversary in Europe.

  • Hi. Me again.

I'm sitting on our front porch right now, and it is such a nice day. Such a nice day, in fact that everyone's kids out out playing. It always makes me feel sour about myself when I see all these lovely little relationships and feel a negative way. I'm a pretty positive, sunny person, but it is getting harder and harder to live in this neighborhood full of kids.

We actually chose to buy a house in this neighborhood because there were so many kids. I think childless homes are actually the minority here. And it is still a wonderful thing- it certainly fills the neighborhood with happy little hoots and hollers, but it's just... hard.

I try to take solace in the fact that not all of these children were easy to conceive. You just never know.

Sigh. Anyway, how's everyone else doing with this struggle?

  • Hey @Monica54321, welcome to May IUI.  I'm sorry your first was unsuccessful :(  Hopefully #2 will do the trick!

@LeFemmeViolette Your post really spoke to me.  I am all too familiar with the nice days we've been having since we live near each other!  We also bought our house in our neighborhood because it was so family-oriented.  I think we're the only couple on our street that doesn't have children.  It makes me ache.  I'm almost positive that our next door neighbor did IVF though (but I don't know for sure).  I just know that they're older (40-ish) and they knew the sex of their son (who is due this July) when she was like 2 months pregnant.  Not sure how you would know that early if you didn't do IVF...  Anyway, hang in there.  You're right, not all those children were necessarily easy to conceive.  We will join them all soon! :)

    *TW loss mentioned*

A week after my loss I was out and about and back to work and life and I felt like I was bombarded by pregnant people everywhere I went and I had two co- workers come back from maternity and paternity leave. I remember being in line at the store and there was a pregnant person ahead of me, behind me, and on each side. It was like the universe was playing a cruel joke on me.  It was incredibly difficult and I was so emotionally raw. The thing I realized is  that I didn't know the story of how these women got conceived their babies. Maybe they had dealt with loss, infertility or both. Maybe it was an emotional journey for them as well or maybe they got KU on the first try. Either way- this little reminder helps me stay calm and it came in handy this week as yet another co-worker announced his wife's pregnancy.

I hope everyone has a great weekend :)

  • @roxgibbons It often does feel like a cruel joke.  But you're right, we have to remind ourselves that others don't always have it easy either.

How is everyone doing as we approach our May IUIs?  I'm expecting AF within the next couple days.  I told a friend I would attend her birthday dinner on Friday night, but then after I realized I am probably going to have to take an injection at 8pm, which will mean I can't go.  I am going to ask my RE how much leeway there is on the time of the injection...  My friend really wanted to make sure everyone in our group could attend (there's 4 of us) and we threw around a lot of dates.  So I feel bad for confirming that day.  I'm debating whether or not to tell her the truth as to why I might not be able to make it...

She was also very adamant about making sure we all were there, which makes me think she's planning to tell us she's pregnant.  She's been trying to conceive #2 for about 7 or 8 months now.  She conceived #1 on the first month of trying, so I've been anticipating a pregnancy announcement every time I see her.  This actually makes me want to tell her the truth even more in hopes she'll be a little more sensitive with her announcement to me.

  • @wifeinraleigh28 does your shot need to be refrigerated? My sister was able to keep hers in a lunch box with an ice pack, if you're comfortable giving yourself the shot in the bathroom maybe you can keep it on ice. I know my sister had hers in a lunchbox for an hour car ride.

Afm finished bcp on Thursday so just waiting on AF. I'm hoping I don't get it till Monday since I work from home on Wed and makes dr's appointments so much easier.
  • @ale9687 Yes it needs to be refrigerated.  This is my 3rd cycle with these meds though and I haven't ever given myself a shot (DH has done them all).  The follistim is also a pen that needs to be loaded up so it's a bit tricky and I'll admit I have no clue how to do it.  And I remember struggling with it when we took our injections class back in November.  TBH even if I did know what I was doing AND could easily just do it myself, giving myself an injection in a restaurant bathroom just doesn't appeal to me and I would rather just stay home :(

Hopefully AF will hold out until Monday for you!!  Does your clinic do early morning appointments?

@wifeinraleigh28 I know what that dready feeling of waiting for your friend to tell you that she's pregnant feels like and I am so sorry you're having to deal with it! Hopefully she understands that you have to back out of your plans.

@roxgibbons sorry for your loss. I too try to remind myself that everyone is on a separate journey and others' journeys have nothing to do with me (basically I tell myself that it's not like another person not having a baby would mean I get to have one). It is a very helpful routine for me too!

    @monica54321 your vacay sounds incredible!!!

Afm, officially planning an iui for May as AF showed up yesterday. DH and I have a trip planned for my birthday this month so hopefully timing works out for the iui or we will be doing TI. We'll be spending a few days in Napa visiting family, then a few days in San Francisco, then taking the coastal starlight train to Seattle for a few days to visit friends. Super excited and using planning as a serious distraction right now!

    Good luck to everyone!!!
  • @wifeinraleigh28 I deffinately understand the struggles with the shots and feeling more comfortable staying home. I am the opposite, shots are  easy for me but taking pills is a big production. I start gagging and hyperventilating at the thought of them and need to be alone or I can't get them down. My clinic does open at 7 am but I live in NJ and work in NYC so I'm halfway to the city by 7 so that's why Wed and Fri work best because I work home those days.

@srh18 I hope your IUI can still happen and doesn't interfere with your vacation dates.
  • @srh18 Ahhh, I hope the timing works out for your IUI!  Your trip sounds amazing!!!  And should be very good quality time with DH.  I think those kinds of trips are so important when we're going through these stressful treatments!

@ale9687 My DH has had similar struggles with swallowing pills.  He says that what works for him is tilting his head back until he can't feel the pill anymore, and then swallowing.
