Not new to thebump but new to the neighborhood...

Hi ladies,

Just wanted to introduce myself as a not-so-new poster.  Last year around this time I was primarily lurking on the TTGP board.  The hubs and I tried to get pregnant for about 6-7 months before I asked him to see a urologist and get an SA.  I know that 6-7 months for someone my age (I'm 30) is not usually recommended but we knew that DH has a pretty sizable varicocele that had the potential to be an issue.  The urologist had him do 2 samples....thank goodness we went with my gut instinct ...his SAs weren't very good at all!  We were referred to a urologist that is a fertility expert.

I don't have the results at hand but the first one had "okay" numbers that our urologist felt weren't terrible but would definitely mean we would probably have to try much longer than 6-7 months.  The second SA barely had a thing in it  :o.  A follow-up SA just last month while better than the 2nd one, still showed that there was no way we would be able to conceive naturally.  So here we are....faced with the possibility that IVF may be on our calendar by the end of the year.

We spent a few months discussing the possibility of surgery for the varicocele if the 3rd SA was bad so when the urologist suggested it as a possible factor that may be worth correcting, we pretty much knew right away that we wanted to try it.  DH has surgery scheduled for early May.  I've read enough anecdotal stories online of success after varicocele surgery so I'm clinging onto hope that this will solve our issue.

In the meantime, we're just going to keep trying until his post-surgery SA comes in.  Depending on those results we may move straight to IVF or continue trying for a few more months.  We're planning on starting a workup on me over the next few months so that we can jump right into IVF by the end of the year if we need to.

We decided to tell our parents only and they've been sooo supportive.  If IVF gets a green light, then we plan on telling siblings but until then, we'll be keeping everything to ourselves.

Anyway, hello to you all...can't wait to read about all the good news that I'm sure will be coming from this board!

Thanks @vssbrm ! My DH's varicocele is quite sizeable (grade 3). Last summer he was teaching swimming lessons and was in a nice cool pool 5 days a week for nearly 2 months. Our first SA followed 3 months after that time period and was not ideal but not horrible. If the cool pool didn't seem to correlate with the better numbers, we probably wouldn't have even seriously considered the surgery since it doesn't bother him.

     Thanks @bbkidz!

Welcome, best of luck with the surgery! I'm new on here as well with severe MFI and we're waiting to see the urologist. Can I ask how long until you should see the change in your husbands count post surgery?

    Thanks @meli123k !

@GarnerWife Our urologist told us that if we were going to see a change, that it'd show up about 4ish months after the surgery at the earliest.  I've read some stories online of people not seeing much of a change until they got closer to 6 months (or more!)  :/
