Success after IF

Vasectomy after MFI? thoughts?

We are so sad to be thinking about this, but we are thinking the time has come to close the door on the possibility of having more children. Our twins were the result of embryo transfer #5. We had one remaining (frozen) embryo that ended in a 6.5 week miscarriage when the twins were 2. They will be 4 in April...I will be 37 in the Fall and we are only ~16-17 months away from kindergarten (so that ~$16-19K/year bill for part time childcare will be significantly reduced when they go to kindergarten)! We have never conceived w/o IVF...we stopped birth control in 2008. We talked to our RE about this after the last miscarriage and he said he has seen surprise pregnancies at 40, so if we don't want the chance of a surprise like that, that we should do something for birth control. Part of us wants to close the door and stop tracking cycles (a habit I can't stop...especially with those handy iPhone apps)! The last straw was that we found out that I am a carrier for a bleeding disorder (our son was diagnosed a few months ago), so 50% of my daughters will be carriers and 50% of my sons will have the bleeding disorder.

Still so sad and such a hard decision.

Anyone else had to make this decision?

Re: Vasectomy after MFI? thoughts?

  • We are still not using bc either. I asked DH if he wanted to get a vasectomy after baby #2 back in 2013 and he said no. I go back and forth on it too. We are so happy as a family of 4 and having another stresses me out, but the possibility is so low... Ugh!

  • We may at some point.  DH and I agreed that if none of our embryos from the last fresh cycle stick, we are done.  We currently have a 2.5 yo DD.  I go back and forth on how I feel about  actively TTA or just leaving it up to chance.  I'll be 35 this year.  I'd like to think I wouldn't obsess over it, but it's hard not to pay attention.  Not very helpful I guess.

  • If it helps, I really don't obsess about it that much. I track my periods and since they are regular, I don't think about it too much. We've been not trying and not preventing since I got my period back when Isobel turned 14 mos, so about a year.
