He's probably waking at night and crying because he hasn't had any "formal" sleep training where he has had to self soothe. Most 14 month old kids will wake at night but not all will need mom or dad to help them go back to sleep.
Your LO probably cries so hard because he knows that you will come and get him and bring him to your bed. You're desperate for sleep, I get that but if you want things to improve then you need to choose a method and be 100% consistent. I did interval checks with both of my kids. I'd give them about 10 minutes or so, then go in and lay them back down, say good night and leave the room again. I never picked them up though. That only made everything worse.
It's really hard and it takes total dedication on your part but if you find something both you and your LO respond to then it should work. It's all trial and error.
