High-Risk Pregnancy

Ultrasound to see blood flow?

well I had my first OB visit this afternoon, she is booking me to get an ultrasound to see the baby's blood flow (or something along those lines) due to my high blood pressure in a previous pregnancy. She said they don't totally understand why we get high blood pressure but they believe it may be because of the placenta.

Has anyone had anything like this? I'm not concerned, just very interested. She said it has to be done by a specialist (she is a high risk OB and will be doing it herself) so not typically done unless requested at the 20 week US (which I guess my Dr didn't realize so now I get another one)

She also told me to take a baby aspirin everyday in an effort to prevent the high blood pressure. Wish my Dr would have referred me earlier!

Re: Ultrasound to see blood flow?

  • I'm not sure if it is the same thing as what your doctor is ordering but I've had both Doppler velocimetry and the umbilical cord blood flow evaluated by US. I last had the latter done two days ago. Both are to evaluate that the blood flow hasn't reversed: my LO has a single umbilical artery and it's more common with this abnormality for the cord blood flow to reverse. In this case, my OB (who is the chief of the OB/GYN dept at my hospital) has said that my baby would need to be delivered immediately by emergency c-section because she would not be getting the necessary oxygen and nutrients compatible with life. Because of this I also have to monitor her activity very closely and go in for weekly/twice a week NST's.
Again, not sure if your testing is the same thing or completely different but I'm glad that you are getting the care and testing you and your LO seem to need now. Hopefully everything turns out well and whatever testing they do has a positive outcome. I know how scary it can be to have to wait for the testing and results but I've made it to 31 weeks despite many complications so there is hope!
  • My placental resistance was high ,which may be what your doctor is talking about, and when that rose my blood pressure was rising, too. I was in the third trimester and they just watched it, but if it had gotten too high and started restricting her growth, then they would have induced me early.
