Pampers...

So this is probably a silly question, but Babies R Us has preset pamper packages that you can put on your registry. It's supposed to last you a year. But I just read on pampers.com that newborns use on average 7-8 pampers a day. If you get the value box, there are about 88. So essentially, in 10 days you will use 1 box. STMs is this accurate or does it,of course, vary by baby? On average, how many boxes of pampers did you buy in the beginning? Like Newborn and then size 1... I'm just trying to wrap my mind around this numerically.

Re: Pampers...

  • The baby bargain book said 600 in the first 6 weeks and 100 of those are newborn.

Thank you. I should've thought to look there. Total duh moment.

  • @vashleyhernandez yeah, and also they sometimes prefer different brands.
  • @ChiccoBeanz can you link the pampers package? I can't find it and I'm extremely curious.
  • Any STMs care to weigh in on sensitive diapers? Hubby and I are both fair skinned and sensitive skinned. I have a mild latex allergy too.... I'm thinking we should start with regular and see where it goes...or should we get the sensitive skin stuff?

It's kind of weird, it's not like a literal package. You tell them you are interested in getting the preset/pre-packaged pampers/huggies set and they would add it for you. So you'll get all the bulk buy boxes on your list and wipes, from newborn to 12 months.
  • We bought as we went. DS went through several small packages from the hospital and as we tried different brands as well as 3 value boxes (of of this newborn) in roughly the first month before going up to size one. He was usually averaging closer to 11 diapers a day.

I'm now looking at the Amazon mom diaper subscriptions. Just started it with DS and so far so good. Will wait with this one until she's in size 1. 20% and free shipping was a nice deal plus my mom let's us use her prime account for it. We've also had friends gift us Amazon gift cards that can go towards it.
  • I was gifted many types/brands/sizes of diaper and it actually was the best thing ever. My daughter was 6.5 lbs at birth and wore newborns for (I think) the first 5-6 weeks. It was helpful to try many different brands, since I found for her shape (she is long and skinny) pampers offered the best fit and most protection. She had more blowouts with Huggies, target brand gave her a rash etc.

Also diaper sizes aren't set in stone. Even now, dd sometimes wears a size 3, sometimes a size 4 depending on what is on sale and available when I go shopping - even though she's 5lb less than the recommended size 4 weight suggestion, it still offers a good fit with no blowouts.

I would say to definitely experiment and try out all the brands to find the one you like, and don't be too overly concerned about the sizing. Even small newborns can fit into size 1 diapers if that's all you have ;)

I wouldn't do the pampers thing you suggested, not at first anyways.... That's just my 2 cents though. Good luck!
  • Agree with @Mizuiro007 that 11 diapers/day is closer. Some babies poop more than others. DD only went every other day. I'd never pre-buy a bunch of diapers at the beginning bc you never know when your baby is going to outgrow a size.

  • If you do buy early or get a lot of diapers from your baby shower no need to worry about sizes or brands. I had a diaper raffle at my baby shower with my first baby and got a variety of sizes and brands. If you have the wrong size or brand, walmart will allow you to exchange them for a different brand or size!! I did this often as I got a lot of huggies which ds ended up being allergic to! It worked great!

  • Every baby is different. my oldest stayed in Newborn up to three months, my second was in size 1 by the end of the first month.

Don't buy in bulk, you may need to return some and get a bigger size.

  • My first was in size one starting in the hospital (almost 11# at birth). He took about 10-12 diapers per day the first few weeks and tapered down from there he's at about 7-8 at 16 months.

For my twins I've already stocked up on 140 newborn size, 660 size 1 and 1050 size 2. Based on my son's usage and growth. Twins are also on the large size.
  • I am wondering about diapers too. My husbands step dad got so excited to hear he was getting a grandson he bought 3 cases of newborn Huggies diapers. I haven't even had my shower yet and I am swimming in newborn diapers. I herd that Walmart will exchange the size but not brand. Mind you, I was gifted these diapers 3 months ago... He is a bit excited.
  • I am a STM and it is true that you will use anywhere from 6-10 diapers a day for the average newborn, but as @vashleyhernandez said, it is not whether you will use them, it is how fast they will grow and move up through the sizes.  My son would stay in some sizes longer than others.  We ended up gifting a whole 88 count box of newborn diapers to a relative because he grew much faster than we thought he would.  I recommend not buying the big boxes early on.

I have psoriasis and eczema and my son has eczema too.  We found that the kind of diapers really didn't matter, it was more the wipes he had a reaction to.  So I would buy a sample of all the different kinds and test them out before picking a brand to stick with.

Any time I was gifted diapers and/or didn't have a receipt for some reason, I would take them to Walmart and just tell them it was a gift and didn't come with a receipt. I would like to exchange them for reason xyz, and I would like to get size/brand instead.

They have almost always been willing to work with me, and I don't think I was ever permanently stuck with diapers I couldn't use.

OP: that does seem like it would be accurate for an average-sized baby, but there really isn't a good way to tell if your baby will be larger or smaller than average at this stage in the game. I agree with the other ladies who suggested buying as you go for now. Your baby may also be born average-sized but grow faster or slower than average and throw off the calculations that way too. You just never know, and getting to the store isn't the impossibility that some people like to suggest. Even if you don't feel like going, your partner will be able to manage that much at the very least.

  • My oldest was only in newborn diapers for 7 days and we had two smaller packs and didn't go through the whole two packs. My middle one was in newborns for 3 or 4 days. I wouldn't get a whole lot of one size or brand without having a receipt. Some kids grow out of sizes fast or certain brands don't work as well for them. My oldest used Huggies, but Huggies didn't fit right with my middle and he used Pampers.

I find that homemade wipes work well at keeping down diaper rashes. If anyone is interested I can post the instructions I use.
  • @AnnH74 please do! I've been doing some research on making my own but haven't come across anything I really like.

    This!
  • Like previous posters said, avoid newborns, or large cases of them and I just exchanged the boxes once he out grew them with very little difficulty. I think only once the store didn't take them back because they didn't carry that particular sized package. I just took them back to another store.

I used disposable diapers with my first and seeing all these numbers makes me cringe thinking about all the money I spent on diapers. This time we're going to try cloth. I'd like to say it's because I'm worried about my Eco foot print and whatever but really the idea of spending $70+ a month on something I'm throwing away is driving my nuts. We'll see what I have to say in a few months though.

I do a mixture of cloth/disposables. My initial intention was to use the Kawaii one-size pocket diapers after my son lost his umbilical stump. I failed miserably because he had tiny chicken legs so they did not fit properly and leaked. At 1 year we finally got the fit right and just use disposables at night (heavy wetter) and when we are out of the house.

I'm planning to move my twin girls into cloth once they hit size 3 or 4 depending on thigh thickness. FYI each brand of cloth fits differently so I had 48 useless cloth diapers hanging around for a year but now they are getting a ton of use. I'm lazy and have enough for about a week I didn't want to have to wash them constantly.

I plan on getting a few different brands/styles to see what I (and baby) like. I got 6 pockets on Patpat for 99 cents. A girlfriend used all Bumgenius 4.0 with great success. I think I'll probably stock up on disposables at the hospital and start using cloth after his umbilical cord falls off. We'll see what happens. Good luck to you Mama!
  • I just got an amazon prime membership (it was on sale for 67 dollars!) and was trying to figure diaper math out and if I wanted to commit to 100ish diapers at a time. I know 100 diapers is only about a week but that is also a long time if you don't like them! I am considering doing cloth at home starting at 5-9 months.
