Due to high blood pressure, I was induced starting around 7pm on September 7 (Labor Day). Twelve hours later there was no change in my cervix. That's when they started me on pitocin to speed things along. Around 2 pm there was a sudden decrease in infant heartbeat and the only way to keep it up was to lie directly on my left side. It looked like a C section was eminent but when the nurse checked again, my dilation was complete! That's when things really started to happen. 15 minutes later, and a good bit of pushing, Lily was born. It turned out her cord had gotten wrapped around her neck and that's why when I changed positions her heat beat had dropped. Tests revealed that minus a bit of jaundice, she was healthy! Unfortunately, I was not. 48 hours after going into labor, I developed post-pardum preclampsia (a very rare condition) and had to be hooked up to magnesium sulfate for 24 hours and despite being on medication, my blood pressure remains high (and may continue to do so for 6-12 more weeks). Nevertheless, all of us are now back home from the hospital and are doing well given the circumstances.
