Unisom?

Hi all -
I'm usually more of a lurker on here, but I'm really needing some help or advice.
I'm 8 weeks, and I have been bedridden four days out of the last week with morning sickness. It started shortly after 6 weeks, but has gotten worse. I have been vomiting and dry heaving occasionally, not often enough to worry though. I read online that a combination of unisom and vitamin B6 is often prescribed by doctors and many women seem to swear by it. I have my first appointment with my doctor on Friday, so I can ask then, but I really wanted to take it in the meantime. When I asked OH to pick up some unisom on the way home, however, he began giving me a hard time about it, then when he brought it home, tossed it at me and told me, "the women at work said you shouldn't be taking this". I immediately started crying. I felt like FINALLY there was something that might make me feel better, and now he's making me feel guilty for wanting to because it's "man made" and since it's not natural that must mean it's dangerous for baby. I don't know what to do, and I feel like Friday is so terribly far away, especially since I'm supposed to work a 9 1/2 hour shift tomorrow.

Re: Unisom?

  • Could you go to a walk-in clinic before Friday? My MS medication is a combination of antihistamine and B6, but I wouldn't want to try mixing over the counter stuff myself to mimic the combination. It is also a slow release formula, which is different than combining separate medications. The medication I'm on was approved for use by pregnant women in 1983, so I feel pretty confident about its safety.

My midwife recommended this, she said in the first trimester many consider is safer than zofran. I'm actually planning on going to get some after work today!

  • My doctor recommended a b6 and unisom combo for my nausea. He said if it gets worse he'll have to prescribe something but for now this was the cheapest and least I could do. Haven't actually tried either because I've been too busy to go get them but I'm definitely contemplating the unisom at least for sleeping through the night.
  • I was just prescribed some after a visit to the ER. They prescribed zofran too but I was told this was safer anyways. I was finally able to eat something after about a week, so I'd talk to your doctor about getting some. I'm still a tad bit nauseated but it's deff made a difference.
  • My OB gave me a list of safe OTMs and Unisom is on there. Call your Drs office and ask. I would put my trust in a dr more then some ladies at your husbands work!
  • I was prescribed unisom and b6. I went to the pharmacy and the unisom was $1300. I asked the pharmacist if the OTC stuff was the same. He said it's exactly the same as the prescription. It has helped me some, but I still feel nauseous and have dry heaves/vomiting.
  • @powellgirl OMG that's insane! Why would they sell rx at that price when u can get OTC for almost nothing?
  • Diclegis is what my fertility specialist just prescribed me (2 tablets at night 10-10mg) It is the Unison/B6 combo, it is also a Class A drug safe for pregnancy. I started it 4 days ago and it has saved my life!

I am taking the unison b6 combo. I take 1/2 a unison at night with b6. Then take more b6 in the morning. It seems to be helping. I spoke to the nurse practitioner in my office on the phone and she told me what to take. You should give your doctors office a call. They should be able to recommend something over the phone or call in a prescription.

  • Diclectin made my sickness worse :(
  • Yes it is perfectly safe during pregnancy (I am a pharmacist btw). The prescription version is called Diclegis. I have been making my own by taking the OTC products.
  • Unisom is safe for pregnancy! I am on Diclegis (the b6 and unisom combo) plus Reglan for my nausea and vomiting. I've been miserable for over a week now and these meds make it bearable although I'm still a mess. Tell ur hubby to educate himself before making accusations that upset u!
  • Unisom is Benadryl, both are approved for pregnant ladies. I'm OCD about checking with both the doctors list and the manufacture of the off brand (I worked for them) and my old QC manager was one of the ones who did studies years ago. Totally safe, and on my doctors good to go list.
  • Make sure you get doxylamine not diphenhydramine, that's the active ingredient in Diglecis. Some unisom has diphenhydramine. It's very safe during the first trimester. You can start with 12.5 mg and increase to 25 if it doesn't work. Then take 25-50mg of b6 up to three times a day. I noticed a difference just with the B6, it took about 3 days. I take doxylamine when my morning sickness has been bad.
  • So the attachment is showing the lactation risk highlighted but the graphic shows that the pregnancy risk is "safest".

    Not all Unisom is Benadryl.
There are 2 types of Unisom: diphenhydramine (which is benadryl) and doxylamine. My midwife said to be sure to get the doxy kind - that's the one that helps nausea.
  • I started taking it this weekend, so far I think it's helping. I still have periods of nausea but I'll definitely take periods of nausea over all day nausea!
