HSG and sedation

Hi everyone,

I was browsing through all of the HSG threads (and there is A LOT of them) and I wasn't really finding the answers to what I was looking for.  I emailed my doc, so right now I'm just waiting for a response, but has anyone on here been sedated during the procedure?  I'm 14 DPO with a negative test  as of this morning, so I'm assuming it's safe to say I'm out for this cycle.  My husband is going to get his sperm analysis done, and we are going to give it one more try before scheduling the HSG.  The problem is that I have a serious case of procedure phobia (seriously, I'm a chronic fainter for almost everything.  I even faint when I get my eyes dilated.  It's prettyyyyyy embarrassing.  My doctor has said it's just my body's response to being nervous.) so I'm not sure how well it'd go over.  I know I'm going to have to get over it if I plan on birthing a child, but for now does anyone have any suggestions?

I am also a fainter. I usually eat before any doc appointments, but since you are getting sedated I'm sure that can't be the answer this time.

Honestly, I usually eat DURING doc appointments to keep my blood sugar up. haha.  I don't need to really do it anymore for getting my blood drawn, though (thank god).  As of right now I'm not being sedated.  I emailed my doc to see if that's a possibility.

I had an HSG done last cycle (CD8). I was NOT sedated, and it was the worst thing I've experienced so far. I too am not good with certain procedures or getting blood drawn. They had me wait on the table for about 10 minute afterwards as I did lose color, and almost passed out. Thankfully, DH was with me, and drove me to and from the hospital.

:-< Oy, that sounds bad.  The nurse I've been speaking with is going to ask the doc about whether or not they can give me valium.  I have never taken that before so I'm not really sure how it would affect me.

Hey I'm so glad I found this post! I am exactly like you when it comes to this stuff-In fact when the doctor explained the procedure to me I was CRYING and he asked me "Would you like to be on valium during this procedure? I can do that for you" and I said yes and I'm so happy I was. To be honest though, I don't think he prescribed enough valium, it was still horrible, but at least bearable. My mom was with me and held my hand the whole time. The other fortunate thing that happened was that my doctor is the head of the whole fertility clinic/most senior doctor (I literally made sure I picked the best) where I am and his HSG's are only 5 minutes max. THANK GOD it was that quick.

Talk to your doctor and see if he can prescribe you something. Also, ask them how long it takes for them to perform it. Mine offered and it worked out better than most from what I hear.

It was still really painful for you WITH valium?  That makes me super nervous.  I'm assuming everything turned out to be clear?  Thanks for the advice!

Yes ma'm, but it was quick. Everything was clear. Are you on progesterone for a short luteal phase btw?

The procedure is different for everyone. I was terrified, but it ended up being not that bad. It was definetly uncomfortable but it wasn't super painful. I recommend taking a few pain relievers beforehand if you aren't able to get sedated or something else. I also recommend having a full bladder as it "straightens out" the uterus and makes entry with the catheter easier. Try to relax as much as possible! Good luck

Yes I am.  The progesterone has definitely lengthened my LP, but I have gotten 2 negative tests so I know I'm out for this cycle.  I stopped the progesterone 2 days ago and still no AF.

Yes, but the doctor hasn't put me on progesterone yet for some reason! I ovulate day 14/15 and periods are usually around day 24. Since he wrote me up for a high grade prenatal vitamin I've been at around AFing 26/27 days. I also supplement with vitamin B6.

When you say 2 negative tests are you referring to ovulation?

Gotcha.  My prenatal has B6 in it, but I wonder if I took additional B6 if it'd increase my LP?  I usually ovulate on day 19, then get my period on the 28th or 29th CD.

CD 34, so the progesterone extended my LP to 15 days, but, like I said, I have gotten 2 negative pregnancy tests so now I'm basically just waiting, waiting, waiting to get my period.
