Monitoring Clomid question

I took Clomid unmonitored through my OB back in September & October (before I knew better and joined TB). Now my sis who has been pregnant twice but has no children. Yesterday she had a minor surgery to reshape her heart shaped uterus and now has been told by her RE they want her to take clomid for her next cycle. I said to her "Well make sure they are monitoring you" but then she asked me "what exactly does that mean?" And I realized I had no answer so I thought I should ask the experts...YOU! So what exactly should happen if she's being properly monitored by her RE? TIA!

Re: Monitoring Clomid question

  • She should be getting a baseline ultrasound Day 3 to check for cysts, estradiol and progesterone.  Then, a midcycle ultrasound as well to check follicle size and quantity.  (usually CD11-14)  Some REs take blood for estradiol and LH at that visit.  Mine did not.  Some also check 7 days post O for progesterone levels.  :)  Good luck to her!

This!  My first RE didn't do day 3 checks.  I ended up switching RE's after my 5th cycle and when the new RE did a day 3 u/s, they found a 50mm cyst, which is why I was having right side pain.  These tests are very imporant.  :)  I wish your sister good luck!

  • Tell her that day 3 ultrasound is to make sure she doesn't have any cysts. Clomid can make a cyst grow quicker than normal causing it to possibly rupture. Also, the day 7-11ish ultrasound is to make sure her lining isn't too thin (which clomid can cause), make sure there aren't too many mature follicles (think John and Kate plus 8), and to double check on cysts again. My RE also took blood to check estradiol and LH. Good luck to her!
