Alternatives to Bio-Oil?

In hoping to avoid stretch marks as I start to get bigger, I did a little research and found lots of great reviews of Bio-Oil, so I went and picked some up earlier this week.  I started putting it on my belly twice a day, and although I hated how greasy it was, I hoped it would be worth it to prevent stretch marks.  It seemed fine until today, when my belly started itching (more than usual).  I lifted my shirt and, wouldn't you know it, my whole belly is now broken out in an ugly, itchy, bright red rash.  Ugh.  I do have super sensitive skin, so I guess I should not be surprised to have a reaction to the Bio-Oil.  Anyway, what else can you fine ladies recommend that I try to help prevent stretch marks?  Preferably something designed for hyper-sensitive skin and not so expensive as to cost my first-born child (haha - see what I did there?) to purchase.  Thanks for your advice!

  • Lol.

I am using coconut oil.  I have super sensitive skin as well.  Can't really tell you if it's working because I am only five months along and not that big yet.  Have read good things about it.  Some ladies say they still got stretch marks at the end, like the last month.  Not sure if anything can really prevent that.

  • Sorry. .can't prevent stretch marks.

  • Thanks ladies I do realize that I may not be able to prevent the stretch marks, but I figured there would be no harm in trying.  Until, of course, I got this horrible, red, itchy rash from the Bio-Oil.  Fun times!

  • Rosehip oil is far better than Bio Oil. There's actually nothing in bio oil that is proven to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. And as Doridoodles says, you can't prevent them.
  • I use burts bees oil.  Though that's mostly for the itching, I had stretch marks the first time, and have them this time also.

This. I'm afraid to say, stretch marks can't be prevented :( However, I used coconut oil religiously on my bump and breasts to stave off dry, itchy skin and also used it post-pregnancy as a nipple moisturizer in between BFing. It didn't leave a greasy feel and it made me smell heavenly, like a coconut macaroon :)

  • I did nothing ever and never got stretch marks...until my 4th child...then in the last month of that pregnancy they just sort of appeared instantly and out of nowhere.  I was quite sad....I went through all those other babies and still had an unmarked belly then BOOM!  I blamed it on the fact that he was born at 11 lbs (not that my others we much smaller) and I had the largest belly ever on record i think.  But with every other pregnancy after that I have gotton stretch marks...so maybe my skin was just like "heck woman.  I stretched perfectly for you over and over but you just keep having babies....that's it, I am done.  Just take the stretch marks"
  • cneiding and not get stretch marks, since this is my first.  Although at this point, the rash that I've had since Saturday is still not going anywhere, so even if I started to get any stretch marks, I would never see them beneath the red itchy bumps all over my stomach.

  • I've been using DoTerra oils, and the Immortelle blend is great for stretch marks. It might not prevent them, but should help with how they appear later. You can get it with a roller ball and roll it right on your skin. Also adding coconut oil can help massage it in.

  • I'm using Lamaze Belly Rub - worked great during my first pregnancy and no stretch marks on my belly or breasts (and I expected I would for sure get them as i got some on my thighs when I was teenager!). I started around mid-second trimester.

  • Thanks for the suggestions.  After the rash and itching didn't go away for four days, I called my OB, who ordered me prescription strength hydro-cortisone cream and told me to take Benadryl at night to help with itching and sleep (it got so bad, I would wake up from the itching!). It took an entire week, but the rash is finally gone, and the itching is much better now.  Anyway, after all that, I am kind scared to try anything else.  I may just use some plain old body lotion that I already have and know I'm not allergic to.  Thanks again for your suggestions!

Belli skin care oil. It smells like lavender, but the smell fades fast so you won't smell like a linen drawer all day.;). I used it with DD1 and didn't get any stretch marks. I know supposedly oils don't help, but my mom and sister have a lot of stretchmarks so figured I might as well try something. It did help the itching. I have sensitive skin and it didn't irritate my skin. I have had two friends use it and not get stretchmarks either. A doctor developed it for his wife and they have a whole line of pregnancy skin care. I do not recommend their facial moisturizer or sunscreen though just the belli oil.
