Pregnant after IF

single embryo fet over 35 successes ?

Hi Folks,

We did our first IVF freeze all (more like one) cycle in October of last year. We had 6 embies of which only one was deemed viable after PGS. We were obviously disappointed, heartbroken and you know yada yada yada...the usual.

We decided to stop trying for a bit because we are wimps! :-)  Now, we are thinking about going forward with the FET this year but we have only the one embryo and I will turn 36 in May.
I was hoping to ask you folks if anyone here was successful in a similar scenario with just one embie and being over 35 ?

Thanks!!!

DH :  36, has Chronic Kidney Disease, on dialysis & is waiting on the transplant list (average wait for B+ is 5 years)

Me:   36, Hypothyroidism, PCOS, BMI 32, need to be done with "child bearing" ASAP so that I can be a Kidney donor (was fun realizing we didn't as much time as we thought :-/ )

We're TTC#1

IUI #1 : 5mcg Letrozole (CD 3-7) + Ovidrel Trigger + Had the one follicle = BFN  (March 2014)

IUI #2 : 5mcg Letrozole (CD 3-7) + 150 iu Bravelle on CD9 (after much begging!) + Had the one follicle = BFN (April 2014)

7th May 2014 - changed REs, this one seems to care (we think....)

IUI #3 : 7mcg Letrozole (CD 3- 7) + 75 iu Bravelle (CD 8-12) + CD12 Scan 5/16 + Had 3 follicles (2 under 15mm) = BFN(May 2014)

IUI #4 : 7mcg Letrozole (CD 3- 7) + 75 iu Bravelle (CD 8-12) + CD12 Scan 5/16 + Had 1 follicle + DH gave best sample so far = BFN(June 2014)

IVF#1 -  ER Only Cycle Sept-Oct 2014, 17  eggs Retrieved, 14 mature, 10 fertilized, 6 made it to Blast & post PGS  5 were not viable due to chromosomal abnormalities
Not sure where we go from here...

Re: single embryo fet over 35 successes ?

  • I never had anything make it to freeze, so I don't have any personal success stories; however, I am currently on hospital bed rest, and my newest roommate (#8) is also an IVF mother.  She did her first cycle at 35, got pregnant with twins, and was able to freeze 5.

She is now 41 years old.  Of her 5 frosties, one did not thaw properly, and she did a single embryo transfer that did not take, however, based on her RE's advice, she then thawed two and is pregnant with twins again.
As she mentioned, the age of the egg is much more important than the age of the mother at the time of implantation.  You may be over 35, but your embryo will not be.  I understand it's scary having the single embryo to transfer, but don't let your age now scare you.

And, FWIW, I didn't even make it to my first egg retrieval until age 37.  I'm now 38 years old and 30w PG with twins.  So, even 35+ eggs can lead to success sometimes.

Good luck to you.  I'm sending all the good vibes to your frosty.

  • Ok so I'm not over 35 and I had 5 frosties to work with but I'll tell you about my success.

I went through three fresh cycles and all three were failures. My fourth cycle I did a freeze all, took a month off and then did my first FET. It worked. After four cycles and almost a year of ivf the FET was the one to work. Hope this helps a little. GL.

  • I did my IVF cycle last May and it turned into a freeze all. I was 34 1/2 at ER. We transferred one little embie in June and I am now 37 weeks. As @AMShark‌ said and me RE told me, the age of the egg is more important than the age at ET. FX crossed for you. Good luck!

  • @ddvj79‌ I've heard there is a slightly better success rate for frosties! Good luck!
  • I had DE-

and a single FET. It worked and I'm 42.

My dr rec a single based on my age and the quality of my embryo. I have 3 good Frozen Embies left from my donor.

  • My dear friend was 39 at the time of her frozen eSET which was successful. There are many success stories with eSETs over 35. When we were cycling, we made the decision to transfer only one. We didn't find success through IVF with my OE, but we did with DE and that was an eSET also. Crazy enough, I am pregnant now with a complete surprise as we were just gearing up for a FET (Dx DOR, low AMH, high FSH at 34). I will be 39 at the time of delivery.

  • As far as success rates of fresh versus frozen, historically FETs have had a lower success rate. However, in recent years FETs have been catching up as technology both in vitrification and thawing has improved. Some clinics have very similar success rates with frozen and fresh, while other clinics still do better with fresh. One possibility for the distinction is those people who do a FET after PGD to ensure embryo quality might help to boost the FET rates. My clinic has one of the highest success rates with DE in the country, but the FET numbers are still a bit lower.

Thank you ladies! I am feeling a bit more encouraged :)
I am of Indian origin so most clinics will not do a fresh transfer because the success rates for fresh transfers in women of Indian or South Asian Descent is very low. I think we just need to mentally get strong to take the plunge and go through with the FET...
Thank you so much ladies for sharing your stories and input!
