Cradle cap

One of my babies still has cradle cap. It's harder to treat now because she has quite a bit of hair. It doesn't flake on its own and looks more scabby than dandruff-y. It doesn't seem to bother her but I feel I should be getting rid of it. Ideas? Pedi said I could try a dandruff shampoo but I'm not sure I want to or that it would even help.

Re: Cradle cap

  • I've used a soft bristle brush after a bath while her hair is still wet. She just got it back but she has a lot of hair so I think she just needs it washed more often.
  • Coconut oil applied and massaged in before a bath and then brushed out with a soft bristled brush before being rinsed well worked for us.

  • My DS has a ton of hair and I've been using Head And Shoulders on him for months. I try to scrape his scalp gently with my nails after his baths, since I can't find my little plastic comb. It's getting better but definitely still there.

  • We use dandruff shampoo on chase after trying everything else and it absolutely helped.
  • Aquaphor makes a baby shampoo and wash that helped when we were dealing with it.

  • We have some around the soft spot. I have no idea when it developed since he didn't have it when he was a newborn. I've been slowly picking it off with my nails during nursing sessions.
  • I used olive oil and a baby comb. I had to wash her hair a few times to get the oily residue out. She still has a little left but it's under a lot of hair so you can't really see it.

  • I just noticed some today. I didn't think he had any! I actually think I'm just going to leave it alone. He has enough hair to hide it, it's minor and he would probably have a fit if I tried to do anything. It will go away with time. If it were a gross case, then I'd probably do something.
  • My LO has a bit that I've just kind of left. I brush it the odd time, but it's not so bad that I feel like I need to get rid of it. His hair is starting to hide it more.
  • DD had it pretty bad at 2mths old, always had a ton of hair so it made it very obvious. Dr prescribed some shampoo which did nothing... What worked the best was coconut oil!! Let it sit for about 10min, I think within about 3 days it was gone

  • The only thing that has worked for us to clear up DS' is Mustella Stelaker cream and their newborn foam shampoo. I used a comb with the stelaker cream to work up the flakes after his bath. We still use the shampoo and haven't had it come back in a couple months.

  • Thanks for the suggestions. We did use coconut oil and a soft brush back when she was mostly bald and it did help. With all her hair that's grown in I had kind of forgotten about it, but on further inspection I was surprised how much was there! I will give your ideas a try.

  • PF has had a small amount but it's getting worse the more hair she gets. I'm going to try olive oil and a toothbrush I think.
