Okay, now that some of the drugs have worn off I may be able to get through the story with minimal typos. Wish me luck.
So I had my surgery yesterday. Initially the doctor had said she didn't think I would be a good candidate for robotic surgery since pervious radiological reports based off ultrasounds had made it appear there were multiple (as in like 20) fibroids. The radiological report from the MRI, however, only showed 5 and she felt confident that with the MRI report and CD that she could do it robotically afterall. This is great because I no longer needed to stay over night and we are looking at a faster recovery. She wrote up the surgery order as "robotic with possible open" to allow herself the choice to chance once she was in there.
So, random things I had to do to prepare for surgery. I of course had a pre-op appointment with my RE on Tuesday. My husband had to work so my BFF came with me. Imagine my surprise when they did a TV ultrasound. My BFF and I now know each other a little better. Anyway, on the ultrasound she was able to fins 4 of the 5 identified fibroids. The largest was measuring 7.8 cm and was pretty much spherical (think Washington apple), then there was a golf ball sized one and the other two she could see there were grape sized. I got all my paperwork and instructions. I had to buy a vinegar and water douche. Yep, you read that right. Apparently that is something that is used occasionally for medical purposes. Imagine my annoyance that they are only sold in 4 packs 8-| . I also had to go to the hospital for pre-op there. That consisted of me informing them that I was only putting $500 down (they wanted $2600) and then having to pee in a cup for a pg test (negative, of course), get my blood type done (which that hospital has done now 3 times since March - you would think it would be on file, it's not like it changes: AB- in case you are wondering), and assuring them that I am not a substance abuser and I don't have sleep apnea or a pacemaker.
Fast forward to Wednesday where I had to take a "special shower" with surgical scrub soap (warning: will blind you if you get it in your eyes), stand there in the cold for 3 minutes while it eradicated all the little bacteria on my body (except my face for obvious reasons), and then rinse it off, dry with a clean towel and put my hair in a bun. I also had to do the shower part Tuesday night and sleep on clean sheets (which meant the in the guest room which was the most uncomfortable night's sleep ever). It made me feel like I must walk around filthy dirty all the time....
We arrived at the hospital around 8 and went to my "room" (read: curtained off bed) around 8:15. The nurse gave me a "regular" hospital gown, took one look at it and me and went to find a small. It was still super large. Clearly they don't make these in petite. I then had to varify my name, birthday, and what surgery I was having done to every person that walked into the room. By the end I just started saying it to every new face I saw. The nurse started my IV and left it there with a saline drip. The anestisioligist came in and he was young, like my age, which was slightly disconcerting. He and H had a great conversation about anime and sci fi; I sat there minorly concerned for my well being. The anesthesiologist also had 2 student with him which did not do a lot for inspiring my confidence. My blood pressure was way higher than normal witnessing all this. Everyone had left but one of the students. I asked to use the bathroom before we proceeded so she gave me the IV bag and wrapped up cords and off I went. Let me tell you, this was not an easy task in an oversized hospital gown with one hand. I came back and she said we were ready to go when my BFF reminded her that I had not yet been given my "cocktail" that was supposed to relax me. Yikes! Anyway, she ran off to get that and meanwhile my doctor came in to answer any last minute questions. The student came back, gave me the cocktail and 30 seconds later I was dizzy. That is the last thing I remember. Apparently I was very entertaining past that point.
When I came to I was sore, of course, and my vision was fuzzy (apparently that's normal). They were waiting on a "room" for me so they let H come say hi, but then sent him back to the waiting room. I was alone for about 60 minutes. The woman in the next cubical was having a conniption fit over something. They kept telling her she couldn't get up. I had a moment with a passing surgeon where we locked eyes and shrugged simultaneously at the scene being made. Finally they wheeled me to the second stage recovery where I saw H and my BFF while they were getting discharge paperwork together. I had to be able to pee before I left. I managed about 1 ounce and that was quite a feat. The nurse said that was fine (which is good because after the d&c they made me pee 30mL and that definitely wasn't happening). I got dressed while H went for the car. I had a moment of nausea and thought I was going to throw up, but I just burped really loudly. The nurse then told me that the line for the wheelchair service was really long and it would probably take 30 or more minutes. She asked if I could walk and by then I would have crawled out if necessary. I grabbed the bag that had had my clothes in it all day as I had a feeling it might come in handy. I made it to the first floor and then promptly threw up my Popsicle they had given me for my sore throat. The nurse was all concerned that I hadn't told her I was nauseous. My BFF said it came on suddenly and I would be fine. She debated for a moment, but ultimate decided to let me go.
Upon getting home I was sick again (I think it was the movement coupled with the after effects of the anesthesia), but was at least much more comfortable. It took hours for me to be able to pee more than an ounce at a time, but that has abated. My stomach is swollen, particularly the incision at the pelvic bone. Right now it looks jagged, but I am pretty sure that is just the tape, bruising, and swelling. Getting up and down is challenging, but I am managing. Right now I am only on ibuprofen. I am going to try to save the Vicoden for later in the evening so I can sleep. I also have an ice pack and a very sassy nurse (H).
In the end, they removed 6 fibroids over a three hour surgery. There was one the size of a pea hiding behind the others. The largest was the size of an apple. My uterus was about the size of a small butternut squash. All the fibroids were attached between the uterin wall and the endometrium. My doctor wants to watch my lining closely as we go along as her only worry at this point is problems there. I am benched 3 months and then we will do an HSG before we start TTC again.
All in all I am doing well. thank you for reading this far and thanks for the well wishes yesterday. I can't post treats from the iPad, but I have fibroid pics if anyone wants to see them, lol
ETA: fixed typos #-o and add the surgery length to the details.

Holy crap, that is quite the prep they had you do. I'm glad the doctor was able to get the fibroids removed. That is crazy that one of them was apple-sized! Rest up, honey. Sending lots of good healing vibes your way.
So glad it went well. I hope you have a smooth recovery.

I am glad it went well and you were able to have the robotic surgery. Size of an apple though? I have no idea if that's any sorts of normal but I would think not??
Thanks for the read, btw. I giggled at "but I just burped really loudly"
I hope you have a speedy recovery! *gentle hugs*
I am not sure how to say this without getting a "solicitation" warning so I guess I just say that I am not longer active on THIS site.
Holy smokes, what an experience you've been through. Hoping your recovery continues nicely. So sorry you are going through this.
Am I the only weird one who wants to see the pics? (If they weren't a joke)
@crimpgirl The pics exist. If you want to see them then I will post them. I didn't want to gross anyone out. They're not particularly bloody, they're just kind of disturbingly fascinating (in an OMG, that came out of my body sort of way).

That was an interesting read. I'm so sorry you had to go through that and I'm sorry they didn't even have a wheelchair to help you out... That doesn't seem like safe protocol. I pray you recover well and be gentle with yourself. ((Stranger hugs))
I wouldn't mind seeing the fibroids... I'm a curious cat. But I'll probably use google... You don't have to post them on my behalf.
So glad it's over and you came through ok! You are quite the story teller - I enjoyed reading your account (though I realize it was probably less enjoyable to live through).
Hugs.
