Trouble TTC

Intro

Hi there!  I finally decided it was time to jump in on this board.  I've dabbled a vey little bit on the TTGP board for a while now, but I feel like this is a better place for me to be.

My H and I have been TTC since August 2012.  I'm now 38 (almost 39) and he is 35.  At the 8 month mark, I inquired with my then-OB/GYN about a referral for testing and I was told "your insurance doesn't cover IF".  Since I didn't trust her answer, I called my insurance company and inquired about coverage.  I knew treatment was not covered, but when I asked about testing, I was told that testing was covered if there was a medically necessary reason for it.  I was then told that medically necessary ≠ unable to get pregnant with well-timed sex.  Essentially, I had to have something wrong with me.  Since my cycles are almost textbook and I had already proven to her that I was ovulating every month, she said there was nothing she could do that wouldn't be lying.

Fast forward until last month, when my new PCP felt something odd near my right ovary during my annual.  I had shared with her my frustration with my previous doctor and being unable to get referred for testing, so at first I thought she was being sympathetic and finding something that could qualify me for testing.  Unfortunately, she really did feel something odd; two ultrasounds and an MRI later, it was diagnosed as a 9 cm pedunculated fibroid.  I'm happy that I was finally referred for testing, but my insurance still has hoops to jump through before I can see an RE.  My PCP referred me to the person in their OB/GYN division who specifically deals with people with gynecologic problems.  I also spoke to someone at the only local RE office and they highly recommended her and said they generally accept the testing that she has ordered because they understand the insurance game.  When I met with the GYN for my consult two weeks ago, she said that she'll make sure I get the RE referral for treatment.  She said that she'll use the fibroid if nothing else is abnormal.

I had my HSG the day after my consult and both tubes were clear.  I had my 7DPO labs earlier today and I'll be going next week for my CD3 labs.  I'm excited to hopefully have answers, but I'm nervous as well since any treatment will be 100% OOP.

  • Welcome!  You sure had to jump through a LOT of hoops to get to see an RE and get your tests done.  So sorry you went through that!  I had uterine fibroids as well (actually just got a myomectomy done 3 weeks ago) so I understand trying to deal with that and figure out how that plays into your whole IF picture as well.  Feel free to PM me anytime if you have questions about fibroids specifically (or anything).  Good luck and hope your stay here is short.

July 2014 - Repeat ultrasound done to measure size of fibroid - 8x9cm (the size of a grapefruit!) Surgery referral made.
August 2014 - MRI done which revealed 2 fibroids: a 13x15cm fibroid as well as an 8x7cm one.  Super freak out mode over surgery plan.  OB-GYN/surgeon said surgery would most likely have to be a laparotomy (open abdominal surgery)
August 2014 - After a 2nd opinion, plan to take Lupron x 2 months to shrink fibroids then laparoscopic/robotic myomectomy.  Surgery date is set for Nov 21st!
November 2014 - Robotic myomectomy done (2 large fibroids removed, mild endo found).  Benched x 3 months

    PAIF/SAIF welcome
  • Thank you so much @EastBayBride508 . As of right now, they do not plan to remove it because it would most likely cause more harm then good.  The MRI and HSG both suggested that it is not impacting my tubes and she said this type usually does not interfere with implantation.

I will definitely take you up on the PM offer if I end up having any more questions.  Thank you again for the offer.
