Parenting dilemma: When to take the sleeping child out of the carseat?

Answer: NEVER take the sleeping child out of the carseat!!!!!! (that is, unless you WANT the rest of your day to be ruined)

  • Ha ha, I was just going to say, I don't :-)

  • I live in the center of the country looking at it north/south so it isn't super hot or super cold at this time of the year.  Usually the temp in my garage is about the same as my house.  I leave LO sleeping in the car with the garage door shut, the window or van door open, and the kitchen door open so I can hear when she stirs.  I also check on her periodically.  Bad mom....I know!

I do the same thing. I even set a 15 min timer over and over until she wakes up. When I wake her up from a carseat nap, she won't sleep the rest of the day. I don't mess with that shiz.
  • If she falls asleep I always wake her up. It might be different if she was a bad sleeper though.

  • I am part of the "keep them awake" camp too. Now that she only takes one nap, no way am I going to let it be a crappy 20 minute carseat nap if I can avoid it because that will be it for the day.  And she always wakes up as soon as the car stops so leaving her in there to finish her nap is not an option for us.  I have been known to sing "The Wheels on the Bus" obnoxiously loud over and over to keep her awake when I'm in the car with her alone.
  • It depends on when it is.  We have totally let DD stay sleeping in the carseat during mild temps, with the garage door down, car door open, and kitchen door open, like PP's.  She will definitely not go back down for a nap if she's had even a few minutes nap in the car.

A time or two a week, she'll fall asleep in her carseat on the way home from daycare (10 min drive). In those instances, I just wake her up. That's usually around 615 and bedtime is between 730-8 so I need to get her fed, bathed (on bath night) and in bed.  She's crabby but we just plow through. Funtimes.

  • We are those jerks who will put him back in his crib and let him fuss it out if he wakes up. R had been a one a day napper since 9 months but on the weekends we can get 2-3 hours out of him. What he doesn't know it's also mommy and daddy's nap time and we need it. However, if it's his second nap (like 3pm) we will just drive around until he wakes up.
  • I can usually transfer C to his crib and he will go right back to sleep. But that is only if he's been asleep for less than 20 minutes.

  • I never let M fall asleep in the carseat. We're almost always home by nap time. If not, one of us sits in the backseat and keeps her awake until we get home.

ETA: it's not always pretty, and sometimes I feel like we might be torturing her.

I'm glad I'm not the only jerk-face who does this.  If DS sleeps in his car seat for five minutes, he thinks he's had his whole nap.  This morning, while driving home from Mass with DS, I drove the last 5 minutes with one hand so that I could use the other to beat him on the head with the church bulletin.

I'm dying laughing while reading this because it is literally what I do while driving!! I'll drive one-handed, tickling him, while pelting him with toys to keep him awake!

  • I have audio books on my ipod for this reason.  My kids dont transfer from car to crib very well so I end up just driving around with them if we are in the car during nap time.

  • my kid won't take naps that last more than half an hour, so if by some miracle she falls asleep while in the car, I WILL drive around for an hour or more just to keep her sleeping. There's no way in hell I'd wake her up

Yeah, I can turn the radio up and talk to E in a loud voice and she'll still fall asleep. Never tried the church bulletin angle though...hmm.
Yep, I have to physically be touching Emmett to keep him awake. I can be screaming his name and he'll still nod off, haha!

  • Our little gym class on Sundays is a little too late and the girls nearly always fall asleep in the car on the way home, even with us talking to them and tapping them on the head, etc. Our garage is detached and 100 feet from our house so there's no way I'd leave them in the car alone. I just pull up outside the front of the house and one of us will sit there with them wth the car running until they wake up.
Or, if we have other plans for the day (like going shopping, out to lunch, etc.) I'll keep driving instead of going home and just drive to the next destination and wait there until they wake up.
I've learned the hard way not to wake them! The difficult part is when only one of them falls asleep.

  • Thank goodness I can usually transfer DS. He falls asleep every single day when I drop off DD at preschool. Preschool starts at 12:45pm so I can't keep him awake that late.
