Re: Second and Third Trimester Discussion (11/24)

  • Could you have read the wrong line for the measurement? I have no knowledge about cervix measurements, but I would try to stay with the fact that your doctor isn't concerned about it. I'm sorry you are worried. I hope your doc is quick to respond and set your mind at ease.

  • @Bananaboat05 I just read a thread from the Bump from 08/2012 about the same thing. All of the women who responded said that a cervix measurement is only accurate from a transvaginal u/s. Didnyou have a transvaginal today?

No, it was abdominal. I wonder at what point they decide a transvaginal is necessary. Thanks for looking that up!
I just hope it gives you some relief until you can speak with your doctor.

  • In the meantime -- is anybody else here considered low-risk but is still considering an induction at 40 weeks? What are your thoughts?

    Lurking! :D

We have very diff situations, but I was considered more moderate risk (septum surgery, gd, & bp at the end) and I pretty much knew I would have a csection. That being said, my OB was fine with me having a csect at 40wks. So I think an induction at 40wks will be fine as long as you & your OB are on board with that.

My body decided otherwise and I delivered at 37w3d.

@snowbigdeal‌ - I have not had the discussion with my OB this time, but we did discuss it a lot when I was pg with DS. I have a lot of fears of going past dates due to the decrease in function of the placenta. I already have an obnoxiously low progesterone level which does not help these fears. Last time my OB understood and had no problem discussing induction around my EDD. I ended up going into labor naturally at 39+1 and hope the same thing happens this time.

My practice automatically does a transvaginal after the abdominal u/s to check the cervix. Hopefully your doctor can give you some peace of mind!

I have a stupid question for STMs. For anyone who observed food and beauty product restrictions during pregnancy do those still apply for breast feeding? Do I still need to avoid sushi, medium rare steak, and good face wash or am I good to go once she's here?
My understanding is these no longer apply. If you got a bacteria from sushi or something the bacteria wouldn't be transferred through breast milk. You'd just have to be careful about what medications you take to make yourself feel better.
  • @Linden25‌ I agree with @Mel&John2013 I did not continue any restriction. I even enjoyed a glass of wine (it works itself out of the system and you do not need to pump and dump as they used to recommend). My BIL brought my sister a huge sushi platter after she delivered my niece (that was her push present). I don't eat sushi, but I thought that was sweet.

  • @bananaboat05 and @footprint

I have incompetent cervix with a stitch (cerclage) placed and on progesterone. My cervix is measured transabdominally, and on a serial basis. Several cervical measurements from at least 3 angles are taken and an average is taken. The tech also must ensure the mother is not having a BH contraction or cramping when the measurement is taken or that there is no uterine irritability.

In general you want to see cervixes (cervices?) measuring > 25mm or 2.5 cm.

  • I'm at 20 weeks right now, and at my appt with my OB last week, we began talking about L&D. I am low-risk but had an unexplained stillbirth at 33 weeks earlier this year. My doc said that as long as nothing changes, she would absolutely not want to do an early induction because there would be no medical benefit (this jives with what I've learned as well). However, she also said that there would be no reason to let my pregnancy go past my due date -- meaning that we would schedule an induction for around my due date, if I still haven't gone into natural labor by then.

This makes some sense to me since I know post-term babies can be higher risk and I really want an alive baby this time, but I'm not totally sure I understand all the possible risks/benefits of inducing around 40 weeks. I plan on having a more thorough convo with doc at our next appt -- the last one was a long appt and I didn't feel like getting into the discussion at the time, but I will be sure to ask her for more specific info later.

In the meantime -- is anybody else here considered low-risk but is still considering an induction at 40 weeks? What are your thoughts?

Im suprised you are not considered high risk due to the stillbirth...do they know what happend? My daughter was stillborn at 36w5d . I have a small pelvis so cannit deliver over 5lbs (she was 5lbs11oz and got stuck). I will be having a c section mist likely and will meet with a specialist next week at our a/s to discuss this as well as timing. My OB thinks around 37 weeks. I would definitly not go past 40 as the stillbirth rate goes up

  • Hi ladies! Okay has anyone here experienced kidney stones while pregnant? I am prone to making stones (i have had 18 kidney stones in the past, 2 of which had to be broken up by soundwaves) I ask because I keep getting a sharp stabbing pain high on my right flank and don't know if it is pregmancy related, gas, or kidney stone. It is painful but not constant, but always the same spot. It feels similar to stone pain i have had before, but everything is squished around in there so i know it could be something else. I have no other symptoms, no blood or nausea or anything like that but usually didn't get these before with stones. I am going out of town tomorrow until late sunday but if it persists will call my OB on monday. Just wondering if anyone else has experience with this. Thanks. Oh and I am at 21 weeks 2 days.

  • I am 16 weeks and 37 yrs old. My doc has brought up an amino a few times now, but knowing the mc risks I'm terrified. I don't want to do it. I hear that through blood tests and anatomy scans they can determine a lot. Am I crazy for being so nervous?
  • @BackstreetPixie‌ I have no experience with kidney stones. How are you diagnosed? I mean, is it non-invasive like a blood test? I get weird random pains, sometimes stabby like, but not usually in the same place (unless it is like rib kicks, which I know what those feel like). Might as well call your OB when you get back.

  • @Thatchmama‌ the blood tests( harmony, maternity 21, etc) check fetal DNA and is 99% accurate along with a/s I felt totally comfortable. After 3 losses with normal results I wasn't doing anything with a chance of loss. My opinion though. There is a pg after 35 board too! Your welcome to post both places!;)
