We bedshare but have a crib sidecarred to provide a barrier and also a safe place to put baby if I need to. You could do this and bedshare as much as you like, keep baby in the crib when you want, too. Looks like this:

Great info and I love your set up! How did you secure the crib?
There are some great tutorials online if you just search sidecarring a crib. I'm actually going to be doing this with our crib this weekend and I'm going to use bungee cords.
@megsandjohn Ours is pressed between the bed and the wall. Some parents use bungee cords or zip ties to secure the crib. It really depends a lot on your bedframe.
The picture is a Google image, not my setup. It is really pretty, though, and I considered getting that same gray chevron sheet (Target). Mine currently has pillows in the corners and is being used as a diaper changing station, or I would take a picture to show.

It looks awesome, but is it safe? I feel like if there is any slight gap in between the bed and mattress the baby can slip in, and what about mattress height. How can you get it to match up so perfectly. I think in a perfect world, this would be ideal, but that picture is not very realistic

We have a sidecar crib, and to me it feels very safe. Right now, while LO is still small, I place her in the crib "sideways" with her feet facing our bed. That way I know if she manages to roll (unlikely, but you never know) she will just roll toward one of the crib sides, and not into the space between the mattresses.
By the time she gets big enough to be actually rolling, I'll be less worried about her getting stuck... since really the concern would be if she rolled into the gap and couldn't lift up her head to breathe.
Also, the nature of the sidecar means I'm always sleeping right next to her, so I know if something is up. I get to listen to her grunting and farting all night long. Awesome! :P
I said I'd never do cosleeping because I was worried about safwty, but my best friend had given me this just in case I wanted to try it....and when I couldn't get LO to sleep in his bassinet for more than 5 minutes without waking and crying, I decided it was worth a try. He still isn't the best sleeper, but definitely does much better in this.
Ok, been out all day and am just making it back here. Here's a picture of our setup. We have two mattresses (one regular size and one thin foam mattress) to bring it up to be level with our mattress. There's a rolled throw blanket next to the top mattress, pushing it out so that it is flush with our mattress, and two rolled underneath it, between it and the edge of our bedframe. There is no gap, and the mattresses are snug and tight.
Note that baby sleeps up against me in the bed, NOT in the crib. Otherwise, there would be no pillows or stuffed animals or diaper changing supplies in the crib. We also would remove the lamp if he slept there, because the cord would be a hazard.

Ok I understand now. Sounds like a lot of work to get the right fit, but I love the idea. I was looking into one of these. https://www.amazon.com/Original-Co-Sleeper-Bassinet Wouldn't that be easier? Sorry for all the questions, this momma just needs some sleep
@AmyG* Pool noodles! I've heard of parents using them under the fitted sheet as a barrier to keep baby from rolling off the bed, but didn't consider using them for wedging the mattress in fight against the bed. I am definitely going to see if I can get one or two from Amazon at this time of year so that I can have my rolled-up blankets back. Lol ...the dollar store had them this summer and I should have thought ahead and picked up a few!
We have a cosleeper (mini) hooked to our bed- and when they get older we usually just sidecar our actual full size crib. They still mostly bedshare with us and the cosleeper gets more use holding supplies...lol! Once they are older they do sleep in the side car crib often...but sleeping next to mommy is always ok.
Christian Homeschooling Mama to 9 kids and Grandma to 1 (so far!) YES we would love to have more!
Baby #9- It's a GIRL!! Born Oct 1st 2014!!
Forever missing my 7 m/c babies now safe in the arms of Jesus!
Re: co-sleeping
Have you considered making your bed safe for bedsharing? Here are some resources to get you started:
