LO Drinking Through a Straw?

A doesn't drink through a straw, are we alone on this? I feel like she should be able to do that now right? For those of you whose LO does this, how did you teach them? She's drinking water from a Munchkin sippy cup with a soft spout now and a Nuk soft spout and has her milk through a Nuk Silicone Soft Spout Active Cup

Re: LO Drinking Through a Straw?

  • Jameson has been drinking through a straw for a while now too. He learned how to do it using a camelback. After he mastered that a regular straw was easy for him.

  • I wouldn't be too worried. DD can do it, but we never did sippy cups, only straw cups. Even then she still has a hard time gauging a regular straw in a cup.

    IT'S A BOY

  • We tried it a few months back a few times and he just couldn't do it and chewed on the straw instead. Then, we went out to a restaurant unexpectedly on Monday and since we didn't plan ahead, we didn't bring a sippy. So we got a straw cup with water to try, and he was able to do it this time, no teaching necessary other than modeling it once that night. I think eventually it will just click!
  • I'm a lurker from May '13, but I got excellent advice about the straw and wanted to share.
I read somewhere to use a juice box. You put the straw in LOs mouth and squeeze until the juice comes out. They will reflexively start to suck.
I tried it with my little guy at 12 months and he picked it up instantly. The next time I have him the juice box he started to suck. Then he was able to do it with any straw cup.
Hope that helps! (retreating back to May 13...)

  • If you find that she is tipping it like her sippy cup I would recommend trying a cup with a weighted straw like the munchkin one. https://www.amazon.com/Munchkin-Click-Weighted-Flexi-Trainer/dp/B00JQSITMI/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1414671879&sr=1-1&keywords=munchkin+straw+cup

  • We learned a straw first. I just had that playtex one I think where you could squeeze and it would go into her mouth for she could learn. We don't use a straw much anymore.
  • We did what @megsw85 did.  We would go to restaurants and use the straw with our finger over top.  Eventually, she decided she wanted to use the straw on her own.  Now, all of her cups are straw cups.

  • Thanks ladies for the feedback. I guess we just have to keep on practicing. We've done the straw holding the top when we've gone to restaurants. @momofcaton, I like that cup! If it can give her liquid when she tips it up like a bottle, I'm sure that would help. Her current straw cup she has to bite the straw to get anything if she turns it up so maybe this one would help some. @kari5186, I'll have to try your "trick" too

We taught ours in a day or less using the same trick as @kari5186 when he was almost 7 months. He's been successfully drinking out of all straw cups since then. It's actually very simple to do. Give it a try.
I was going to suggest a variation that we used. Just take a full cup and a regular straw. Then place straw in cup and put a finger over the straw so the water stays in the straw. Give LO the other end of the straw and let go of the finger so they catch the water. Gradually encourage the to suck on the other end a little before you release the finger to let the water/milk drip down. Then gradually change the angle so LO actually has to start to suck and place the other end (with finger hold it) back in the cup. May have to repeat this a couple of times. Presto.
