moms with thyroid experience

Im really worried....ive always been treated for hypothyroidism so when I found out I was pregnant, i went to my endo right away. At that time (I was 5 weeks or so) all tests came back fine. My tsh was 1. Well my lab results from a few days ago came in and my tsh is 18! My synthroid dose is being increased of course but I don't understand this huge jump...im so worried for the baby....anyone with experience?

I think the important thing is that you have been monitoring it with your doctor and can adjust your medication. The studies I have seen on fetal effects of hypothyroidism are related to being under treated throughout pregnancy. I know it is stressful, but keep following up and try not to worry!

During my first Trimester my thyroid was a little on the over active side so my Dr sent me to an Endo for more tests. The endo dr said it was a lil high for a pregnant woman so she wanted to put me on Synthoid. The following day I had my first trimester screening tests at the hospital & that Dr freaked & told me not to tale synthoid while pregnant, that they're unsure what it does to the fetus. So I would tripple check with your Gyno to make sure the meds your taking are safe! My throid since has leveled out after my first trimester, hope you're feeling well!!

For those who don't know, the TSH doesn't measure thyroid, it measures thyroid stimulating hormone. Like 2 sides of a seesaw, elevated TSH means Thyroid is low ( hypothroidism). New dose of synthroid will start working right away, but it can take up to 6 weeks for TSH to accurately reflect the change so as long as your being monitored with the new dosing, there isn't anything else the Dr can do. Good Luck!

I had a total thyroidectomy in Febuary. I went to my Endo when I was 5 weeks and my TSH was excellent at .89. 4 weeks later we tested and it had shot up to 11! We immediately adjusted my meds and this past Monday (14ish weeks) my TSH is down to a manageable 2.8 - still a little higher than either if us want it. I'm to take a weekly boost in addition to my daily HRT and that should hopefully get me wherei want to be.

It's so good that your Endo is monitoring your levels and will be able to adjust your meds. It's when Hypothyroidism goes untreated complications arise. Good Luck!!

I have been in synthroid for over two years. When I got pregnant, my RE increased my dose. When my TSH levels went up, my endocrinologist upped my dose again. I'm now taking twice the daily dose I took when I was not pregnant. I'll be going back to my endocrinologist every 6 -8 weeks. Apparently, it's very common for pregnancy to put your thyroid our of whack. Fortunately, it's easily treated with medicine that my RE, OB & endocrinologist all agree I should take during pregnancy.

I have Hashimoto's and this is something that freaks me out. When all of this is said and done, see if you can find an endo who will treat you with a combo of T4 and T3 hormones--that's the only thing that keeps me stable. In the meantime, rest assured that Mother Nature has a brilliant way of getting what the baby needs to the baby. Most often YOU'LL be deficient in something because the baby will have stolen it all away. And keep monitoring and adjusting as needed, obviously.

I have been treated for Hypothyroid for 8 years now. When I had DD 3 years ago, I had to adjust my dosage a few times. After, however, was a different story. Remember, your thyroid creates hormones. Your hormones are out of wack when you are pregnant and postpartum. It took a year to get my levels right again after I stopped BFing. But don't worry, it's not unusual. Just do what your doc says and make sure to get tested a couple times throughout your pregnancy.

I just found out mine is rather low. I've never had that appear before in my blood work. The midwife said it's probably pregnancy and breastfeeding but that I should keep an eye on it. That's all for now.

Baby doesn't produce their own tsh until around week 20 so just take your medication and have them monitor it and you will likely see some regulation around then. Mine was at 18. We got it down to 8 with increased dosage. Continuing to see a specialist and watch my levels. Don't let it stress you out.

I have transient hyperthyroidism during pregnancy. Since it doesn't last long and isn't too extreme, my doctor doesn't want to medicate. That said the more common of the two is hypothyroidism and it's perfectly safe to take synthroid during pregnancy. https://www.drugs.com/pregnancy/levothyroxine.html

Did your MD seem concerned at all about possible effects on baby?

I had thyroid cancer 5 years ago and habe been with medication ever since, after having it removed. Synthroid does not affect you baby if prescribed, nonetheless if you need it and do not take it, it can lead to miscarriage or a hormonal unbalance that will affect yout baby.

It is expected for the tsh to go haywire during the pregnancy, much like everything else, the important thing is to keep it under control and doctors' orders.

Good luck and ir may be a good idea you learn to reaf your body's signs regarding tsh... Watchout for feeling extra tired (more than previous days) feeling your eyes bulging out, muscle weakness specifically on arms among others. The bad news is that given its hormonal nature, you can experience this things due to other hormones also, so it is very important to visit your doctor often.

I was on synthroid with my last pregnancy -- baby was/is fine.  I went off of the medication shortly after having my DD.

My OB is now sending me back to the endocrinologist because my TSH numbers are off again.  Apparently your TSH numbers can change dramatically between first and second trimesters.  Agree with others...it's all about hormones.
