Hemangiomas

First time back to the bump after Anthony was born on 9/17 so first let me congratulate all you ladies on the birth of their precious little ones:)
Anthony was born a healthy 8.1 lbs and 20 1/4 inches. He is now a 11.1 lbs and 21.5 inches so he is rapidly becoming a big boy. About 4 days after birth we noticed a red mark just below his eyebrow. in the last few weeks it has gotten a bit larger and brighter in color. The doctors believe it to be a hemangioma which is quite frightening since it is on his face. I know there are much more horrible things that could be wrong with him but this is kind of freaking me out since everything on the internet shows these as being huge tumors that expand and blow up before reaching their max size and eventually shrinking and disappearing. It's hard to think of my perfect little boy having a huge disfiguring mark in his face, even if it isn't forever I know people will be staring at it.
So my question is are there any other people out there who have babies with these types of birthmarks on their face or know of anyone who had children with this and if and when they disappeared. The doctor said there is a medicine they can give him to make it shrink but I don't know when this can be administered and if it would be safe. I guess I'm just scared because I don't know what's going to happen. Thank you everyone for their support:)

Re: Hemangiomas

  • My cousins little guy had one several years ago and I believe it was in the same area as where you said lo's is.

I've never heard of them acting in the way you described. The are essentially just a bundle of blood vessels and can be removed, which my cousin did when he was young. I think they waited until the hemangioma had stopped growing so he may have been 6-12 months. They need to close off the vessels that are forming the hemangioma or it can grow back. It was an easy procedure from what I remember and his hasn't come back in 9yrs.

I would make an appointment with your general doc to have a referral put in to a specialist to treat it because I have had over zealous family docs try to address similar things and not know exactly how to handle it (my mom and it was different, but made me realize the importance of going to the specialists for some things)

In the end, your little guy will be just fine either way you go!
  • My DD1 has one, not on her face but on her labia. It grew slightly when she was an infant, but it hasn't gotten any bigger than pencil eraser size. The pediatrician has just kept an eye on it to make sure it didn't keep growing. Since it hasn't, he said it would eventually go away. I'm not sure what they do in the case that it does keep growing.

  • DD has one on the back of her neck along her hairline. Because of where it is and the type it is, we're just watching it.

But, I read up on them to find out more. The medication is a beta blocker that is used to treat blood pressure issues in adults. It looks like the recent studies have shown that treating them as infants with medication has yielded good results.

  • Thank you for all your comments. This is my little chunker's mark now. Just hoping it doesn't get too much bigger...
  • I have a friend whose baby had a hemangioma on her cheek. About the size of a pencil eraser, nothing terrible but also not something a girl is going to want on her face. Mom chose to treat with the oral beta blocker, they started around 6 months. So now after about 4 months of treatment, it's almost completely resolved.
  • My husband has a huge birth mark on his bottom lip, inside is mouth and tongue, and some on his chin. I honestly don't even notice it anymore, but he's constantly asked what happened since it looks like he was punched in the lip. Because it is on his lip it tends to bleed and get chapped but nothing some good Chapstick can't handle. He was given the option to get it removed but declined because honestly it would be weird if it was gone, it's part of him.

My brother also had one on his forehead and going in between his eyes. Im not sure it's the same type but it faded as he got older and u can barely see it now unless he's working out or really mad.
