I would assume the parents gave their poor child a "unique" spelling for the name Evelyn. I like the name Evelyn but I am not a fan of that spelling if the unique thing is what you were going for.
I've posted an extended version of this in other places on the Dec 14 board, but as a "unique" variant of a common name, I beg you not to give your kid a common name spelled incorrectly-- I suspect I've lost 1000s of hours of my life to slowly spelling out my name, answering follow-up questions and then correcting people who spell it wrong anyway. People subconsciously associate names spelled wrong with sloppiness and inability to follow rules, which isn't great for career prospects even before the awkwardness of deciding whether or not to notify your boss that they spelled your name wrong on an email to a client. Don't even get me started on travel agents booking tickets wrong, business cards misprinted, insurance not matching up, etc.
Finally, I'd like to add, while some friends love having offbeat/unique names, I know exactly ZERO people who think"I'm so glad my parents gave me a generic common name but spelled it differently!"
"And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness."

100% this. Incorrectly spelled names ruin lives - my name spelled the way it is right now is a stripper/porn star name. IF it was just spelled the normal way it would have been fine. Thanks a lot parents...
I know what sound you are going for here, but for some reason I want to say "Eh-vah-line."
As a teacher it's definitely one of those names that you look at on a roster and go "oh here we go, now what pronunciation do I think the parents going for here?" So I say just use Evelyn, which is a great name IMO.
I would pronounce it Kid-Will-Never-Have-A-Souvenir-Keychain.
From firsthand experience as another one who was given a fairly common name with an unconventional spelling, it can be pretty frustrating to never be able to find anything with your name on it. Not to mention the years of substitute teachers ALWAYS butchering the pronunciation, no matter how obvious you may think it is.
Agreed with the others, Evelyn is already pretty, skip the headache.
Seriously? She'll never find a keychain with her name on it? Ok. DEVASTATING!!! OP, tbh I would pronounce it correctly, but I would judge you forever for spelling it weird. In the grand scheme of things, who gives a shit what I think? I'm just a b who has nothing to do with your life or your family. Also, I have a weird name that people constantly spell AND pronounce wrong and you know what? It doesn't bother me. Sure it's annoying but, seriously, I gots bigger problems in life.

Yeah, that. Who are you anyways?

By this reasoning Hordor is looking even better! Who cares about a name when there are bigger issues at hand? Just name the kid Hordor and move on.
Let's hope the kid never loses her keys because nobody will know who they belong to= a bigger problem.
I'm going to start a support group for all the people (and especially the children to come) who act like it doesn't bother them but are secretly harboring some resentment about having a strangely spelled name and never having gotten any name keychains. LET IT OUT, THE STRUGGLE IS REAL!
My mom got creative with spelling my name, and 30 years ago it wasn't a common name anyway. As a result even my grandmother still spells my name wrong on birthday cards. I gave up correcting people years ago. When we decided to name LO Jackson, I get asked if we are using an X all the time. It makes me stabby.
My sister is another who is taking a name and making it younique. My niece will be named Kaidynce - yuck!
WTAF? I don't even understand how she came up with that spelling. Fuck, probably the same way my SIL is coming up with their ideas. Any chance your sister is in idaho?
Nope, but close, Oregon.
I was hoping and praying she would have a boy because she had the name Noah picked out. Kaidynce's middle name will be McKenzyie barf again!

Is that....mic-kenz-yee? What is that? I just can't
My mom is named Evelyn. Someone is always spelling it wrong. It drives her insane! Making it unique just may lead to frustration when older. You have to do what you feel is best in the end.
