  • She is a sweetheart! Tate was in the 90+ percentile my entire pregnancy, then dropped to the 15th because of issues with nursing. He is back up to the 85th at almost 11 months. I ended up supplementing, and if I did it again, I would feed more, now that I realize he was still hungry after feeding the quantity the pedi advised. I found the lactation consultant very helpful, but my body had other plans, unfortunately.

Thanks! Per pedi she is currently in the 4th percentile. She was 6lb 1oz at birth. Pedi wants her at 25th. The LC says she is fine and gaining just right. We have been doing weight checks and weighed feeds weekly. I just want to know who to trust and be sure my baby is thriving. She doesn't act hungry after eating so i am not sure

  • I realize this is coming from someone who does not know your specific situation, but the Pedi wanting her to reach the 25th does not sound unreasonable to me. Hope you get the direction you need!

  • Such an adorable little squish! I hope you find a pedi that supports you through BFing. It's frustrating when doctors want to jump straight into supplementing. If that's the route you eventually have to go, wouldn't you want to know you made your best effort trying?! Hang in there mama! You're doing a great job! FX that little lady starts packing on the pounds!

    She's a cutie!

No advice on the BF front, bc we FF, but my doc uses the World Health Org. percentiles. Look her up there - it might make you feel better! (American babies skew big.)

I just did the math on your LO's weight gain...its sitting at 4 oz avg per week which is a little low, but not bad. What was her actual weight when you left the hospital? Since most babies lose several ounces before they go home, and that might put her up a little bit more. She's gained over 27 ounces since her birth according to her birth weight, and that is not bad at all. She's gaining, not losing, so I wouldn't stress too much.

When we left hospital she was 5lb 9oz and 2days later at pedi visit she was 5lb 4oz.
ETA: thanks, she is gaining and that makes me happy.

  • I would not stress about percentiles, as long as she is growing that's the key. Baby Boots was less than 5 pounds at birth and wasn't even on the growth chart. At 11 months now he's still only 6th percentile on weight but pedi is happy as long as he's growing. She said his weight will catch up, or it won't and that's fine too. He's meeting his developmental milestones and is happy as can be.

    So adorable!

We had weight gain issues with B as well. She has been consistently in the 3rd percentile and is still under 18 lbs at 14 months. We went to the ped for weigh ins every month and now that I'm back to work and commute, we go every 2 months. The ped (who is very young and doesn't have kids) actually told me that I needed to STOP breast feeding in order to measure the amount of formula she was getting. I got alot of support from my local breastfeeding group and really helped me when I was struggling and ready to quit. I was able to EBF until about 8 months, then started supplementing with formula. I'm still BFing (usually just once a day) at 14 months.

You'll know what the right thing to do is. Even with pressure from the Dr, I knew that B was happy and healthy and not starving. She's just little. Not all babies can be the "perfect" weight.

  • I think a new pedi might be helpful. My baby girl weighed in at 7 lb 13 oz at 9 weeks. She is not even on the chart for percentiles. Our doctor has been nothing but supportive! She says LO is happy and gaining between 3/4 of an ounce and an ounce a day, which is great! Sounds like your baby is fine - someone has to be on the lower end of the growth curve right?
