I decided to try Dr. Browns bottles and bought the 8 oz. size. They look so big to give to my 1 mos. old but I was hesitant to buy the 4 oz as I would only be able to use them for a limited time. Did you give your LO the larger size? I am guessing its all about the nipple not how large the bottle is.
We used the large and small Gerber bottles, pretty much interchangeably because IME you're right, it's the nipple that matters. I did find that we liked the small 5 oz bottles better for a brief period when he was starting to want to hold the bottle himself but wasn't strong enough to hold the 8oz bottle. For my son, there was only a period of about 3 months when he needed more than 5 oz in a bottle before we started switching to sippy cups for most liquids. Also now that we're night weaning, I use the small bottles again for portion control.
Anyhow, you don't really need the small bottles, but they aren't useless either :-)
thats a good point about using the smaller ones when they're able to hold it. Do you know if Dr. Browns makes 5 oz?
We got a bunch of the 4 oz. Dr. Brown's and DS was eating 5 oz by the time he was 2 months old, so I felt like it was a waste to have as many 4 oz bottles that we did. They also leaked a lot when we made 4 oz bottles, so looking back I would have preferred to just use the 8 oz bottles from the start. DS is starting to try to hold the bottle and I don't think he'll have any problem with it.
If anyone has the Dr. Brown's bottles, be careful to keep any liquid below the line on the bottles. I think the instructions say this can cause them to leak.
I never liked our 4oz bottles. They don't use them for long enough for me to think it was worth it. My babies had enough other opportunities to hold/grasp items that I wasn't concerned about them holding their bottle that early
