High level of amniotic fluid

Anyone else been told they have high levels of amniotic fluid? We also have SUA (baby is missing one umbilical artery). Like everything they tell you with pregnancy, both conditions come with associated risks, and the statistics of cases with complications aren't exactly low. We've done first and second trimester blood screenings and the NT scan and all came back negative so that's reassuring. Dr. said because those results were good he isn't recommending an amnio at this time. So for now, I'll get a NST once a week and an ultrasound with the perinatologist specialist every four weeks. Just wondering if anyone else had been diagnosed with having too much amniotic fluid..

I know someone who had this (polyhydramnio), and it didn't turn out well for her, but the baby was also born at 6 months, and I don't know much about what she was aware of prior to the birth as far as diagnoses go. There seems to be some sort of autism/downs, and the baby had hydrocephalus and needed a shunt, it had IVH (intraventricular hemorrhage) and multiple other things. They have to have a live in nurse, and the baby is at the hospital more than home. I don't know much about polyhydramnio, but I have a hard time believing that all of these medical problems came from that. I'm by no means trying to scare you, this is simply all I know about it. If your doctor isn't concerned, and your tests have come back fine, then I wouldn't worry about it.

I was told this about a month ago. My u/s doctor said that the extra amniotic fluid could mean that there were chromosomal problems with the baby, even though all my other tests came back normal. He said it was up to me if I would like to get an amniocentesis, which I did not. So, I of course freaked out, and called my doctor. As I waited for his call back, I went online to research, but most of what I could find was about low amniotic fluid. What I did find was that it could be a sign of gestational diabetes, chromosomal problems, or simply just urine from the baby. My doctor finally called me back and reassured me that there was absolutely nothing to worry about...and said that it was the baby peeing! At my next u/s about a week ago, there was still more fluid than there should be, but this time, the u/s doctor didn't seem as worried about it. I go tomorrow for my 3-hour glucose test, and he said as long as that turns out fine, and I am not diagnosed with gestational diabetes, that there was nothing to worry about. So, I am just praying that everything turns out fine tomorrow. Good luck to you!

It seems this is more common towards the later part of pregnancy. I wonder if mine would have even been detected if I hadn't been sent for an additional u/s to check for the SUA. Technology is great because it identifies potential problems for us, but honestly, I think sometimes its better not to know all these possibilities of things that end up just causing us extra worry. Same with all info we have access to on the internet.. once you start reading into this stuff (and hear all the worse case scenarios) you start to go crazy with worry. The added stress is not good on us. What we have to keep in mind is that worry is not going to change the outcome. I've forbidden myself from researching it anymore online, going to start there and hopefully my outlook will start to improve.

I agree. I've been diagnosed with a velamentous cord this time around. My MFM told me to stay off of Google, but of course I went anyway and read stuff I shouldn't have! It caused me a great deal of worry, (and still does when I think about it.) My MFM assured me she thinks everything will be fine, but I still need to be seen frequently to keep an eye on it.

I'm so thankful for technology and my MFM discovering my VCI, it could have easily gone unnoticed and things could turn catastrophic.

I had high levels last pregnancy. Mine were due to blood sugar levels probably. I was in control, but simply by being diabetic, there was more. Dd was a few weeks early (not due to the af) and is just fine.
