2.5 year old pacifier battle

DD has been using a pacifier strictly for bedtime for sometime now. Well I would really like her to get rid of the thing once and for all. So, my question is has anyone tried the cutting the tip off the pacifier method or going cold turkey with the darn thing? How effective was that? Did anyone use any different methods? I realize each child is different and different methods work for different kids I am just trying to get some feedback. I know she is capable of going to sleep with out it because if she naps at daycare she does so without a pacifier.

SIL kept telling her DS that his bink was going to pop (over and over for about a month) and one day she cut the tip off and left it for him. He picked it up and came running in saying "mommy, mommy bink popped" and that was the end of it.

Thanks ladies. I appreciate the feedback. I had a talk with her (I realize that seems crazy but she usually does well if I sit down and example something out to her) anyway I asked if she was a big girl now to which she replied yes. Then I asked her if big girls used pacifiers to which to she replied no. So then I asked her is she wanted to help me cut the tip off of hers. So I took her and it to the bathroom, grabbed the scissors and left her put her hand over mine as I actually cut the silicon from the pacifier. She threw a fit last night but tonight she seems to be content with just having the pacifier base.

This is basically what my mother did with me. Worked like a charm!

I tried taking DD's away around 18 mo and she flipped. I poked a tiny hole in the end and she freaked. We're talking bashing her head into the crib to the point where I was concerned she was going to hurt herself. I caved and gave one back. At 2 she started school and the teacher didn't realize she had a paci in her bag. She was napping fine without it at school so I just told her she was big girl and didn't need it anymore. She whined for about 2-3 nights but was fine. Cold turkey definitely worked better in my house than modifying the paci.

DS was 3.5 (old, I know!) when we finally got rid of them at night. I told him I would not be buying any more, so if he lost his last one, that was it. He got up from a nap one day, used the bathroom, and accidentally flushed it down the toilet! It was rough for a couple nights but went ok.

A few friends actually punctured the pacifier so it wouldn't "suck" as well, if that makes sense.

DS1 gave his up on his own when he was a bit over 2.5...he just woke up one morning and decided he was done so he bit holes in all of them even after my warning that if he bit holes I wouldn't be buying anymore.  He nodded his head and that was that.

DS2 still has his for nap and nighttime and I don't see him giving them up on his own.  We're letting him keep it til 3 and then will push the issue.  He has started biting holes in them but doesn't mind how they feel after he bites them so I don't think he would care if I poked a hole or cut the tip off.  We'll probably just have to go cold turkey with him and deal with a few rough nights.

Dd is 2.5 and on Monday I had enough. I cut the nipple, told her it broke, and to my utter surprise she was fine and didn't make a peep about it the last two nights. Both nights I reminded her it was broke and she said ok pacifier is broken. That was it!

Update on the situation - we've now been about a week without it. She still demands it sometime at night, but that's more of her trying to get out of going to bed. Though she still "needs" the base occasionally I've noticed that she ignores it more and more each day.

Thanks everyone for your input. I can see that some of the kids were obviously ready to move forward without the pacifier. I wonder how we can tell when the right moment comes...

My daughter will be 2 in december and my husband and I are in complete disagreement with this! I'm fine with her having it for a while longer he wants it gone now! It drives me nuts that friends and family are pushing me to get rid of it now. 'd like to believe that when she's ready to get rid of it then i will be able to tell but then she's my first and all of this is new to me lol #2 will be here in April so I think getting rid of it now would be good because she might not be interested if the new baby uses one .... as opposed to snatching it from the sibling.
