How Many Weeks will you go per your dr?

So this is my first twin pregnancy and I have four other children.  I have never made it to 40 weeks, my last child I was 37w1d.  With twins, I was thinking it would be 37 weeks, but is that right?  I'm so Type A and need to plan as much as I can, while knowing it can all change in an instant.  So when does your OB say, you can expect delivery (I'm looking to do vaginal)?

Thanks!

Re: How Many Weeks will you go per your dr?

  • First, I would say there is no planning when it comes to a twin pregnancy.  One reason it is considered high risk is because everything can change at a moment's notice.

I think my doctor was fairly typical, but I am sure each practitioner varies.  A twin pregnancy is considered term at 38 weeks, thus your due date is actually 2 weeks earlier than what it really is. My doctor would have induced if I didn't go in to labor at 37 weeks.

Personally, I had a wonderful pregnancy.  Felt great, was never sick and gained a healthy amount of weight.  Out of nowhere at 26 weeks my cervix began to shorten.  I continued to feel great with absolutely no symptoms of anything untoward.  At 28 1/2 weeks, my fFN test was positive predicting preterm labor.  I went on immediate bedrest with the expectation they would be born within the next 2 weeks.  Thankfully, we made it another 6 weeks, and they were born at 34 weeks.

I am also Type A, but there is no such thing in a twin pregnancy (or with twins really)

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!
  • Mine says 38 weeks but I'll go as long as I safely can.

  • My twins were di/di, so I had an end date of between 38 & 39 weeks. I developed mild pre-e around 32w and was told I wouldn't go past 37w.

    My water broke at 34w.

I have an older singleton and he was born at 37w1d; my water broke w him also. I honestly thought id make it to 36-37 weeks. You never know.

Yeah... envision 37w as your "Maximum" if you are high risk or have had other children that early.... but don't "plan" to go that far. Plan to be flexible and ready to handle hiccups as they come. I went to exactly 40w 1d with both of my singletons, and delivered my twins at 37w 2d due to pre-e. From what I've gathered from most other MoMs with singletons, a LOT of them seem to deliver about 3 weeks earlier with twins than they delivered with their singletons. Delivery will happen whenever it happens. Just be prepared for anything once you hit 27w (and earlier, really - bed rest can start at any time depending on how your body handles the pregnancy).

As a general rule of thumb, most practitioners do not want twin pregnancies, even under the very best conditions, to go beyond 38 weeks. There are still plenty of women who ended up delivering full term at 39 to 40 weeks, but most medical doctors strongly recommend delivering by 38.

Just don't make goals beyond staying healthy and weighing the odds in favour of a safe delivery.

  • Knew I'd have a C..Had one before and loved it!
Term is 32 and drs wanted me to go to 34..ha! My DD was born 36w6d, so I knew this wouldn't happen with trips. Preterm labor 25w6d. Couldn't feel contractions but cervix dilated to 2.
Went in for regular appt at 29w5d. Dilation check was at 6 cm and continued to 7 cm (again, couldn't feel anything), so w decided to do a c.

  • Oh honey, I'm type A as well and I have had to get use to NOT being Type A anymore. Nothing about twin pregnancy is predictable. My OB said she would schedule me between 37-38 weeks. So, I am scheduled but my contractions have now started at 36 weeks. It could literally be any day now, or I might make it to my scheduled C-section. Predictability is impossible at this point!
  • I think the others have said it, but I will reiterate...you can hope for one thing, but always try to expect the unexpected.

I'm 29 weeks and have had, more or less, a complication-free multiples pregnancy. These are my first babies. I'm 29 and in good health (no pre-existing health conditions). We are aiming for between 36 weeks and 38 weeks, still, we are basically ready for them to come "any day now." Prepare for the worst and hope for the best, I guess?

  • My OB scheduled my c-section for 38 weeks, but he told me he fully expected me to go before then, probably around 34-36 weeks due to age, BP, and a few other risks.

He also said that after 34 weeks he would not try to stop labor but anything before then if I went into spontaneous labor and everything else was ok (BP, placenta, babies not in distress) he would try to stop labor.

    Di/di: two placentas, two sacs

My OB would have let me go until 39 weeks, but my MFM recommended 38 because baby A was looking big and had a lot of fluid in his sac, he was afraid I would have trouble if I waited another week.

  • My OB was a huge advocate for vaginal delivery of twins, which I am so thankful for, but after 12 hours of induced labor, and 45 min of pushing they discovered A turned and got stuck with his giant head and B flipped breech. I asked for a c section even though she said I could still do it. I didn't want to end up with a vaginal and c section delivery.

  • Dr. Scheduled my c-section for this Thursday which is my 38th week.
  • 38 weeks is as far as they would have let me go. My water broke at 35.6, though.
  • There really is no planning. We were induced at 37 weeks, but I also had a friend who went at 28 weeks. It's scary, but if you go into it assuming that it'll be early, you'll be pleasantly surprised when it doesn't rather than terrified when it does.

That said, most OBs will induce mono di twins at 37 weeks and di di twins at 38 weeks.

  • @greks84 If your OB has fancy equipment you can ask her to check for two placentas.  If not, when you go see your MFM or get the anatomy scan you can ask the specialist.  Just to let you know, it is rare, but if you have di/di babies there is a tiny chance they could be identical.  If the egg splits early enough it can implant in two different places and each have their own placenta.  So, you don't 100% know if they are fraternal until they are born and start looking different.  Our MFM always said he was 90%sure they were fraternal (two different eggs, two different sperm).  Then when they were born they had to get blood tests and they were different blood types, so I know they are frat.  AND they look completely different.  When do you see the doctor next??
