Lying wide awake it's 1AM here in the UK and I have tried everything, my bf is snoring soundly beside me. At least someone will rest well. ladies what do you do when your thoughts drive you nuts and you can't sleep at all despite being exhausted?. I have spent the last two hours reading the various posts on here. I even read a book for awhile. I'm now regretting not having had any wine tonight as I'm sure that would have helped . I know I know I should stop posting and start lurking and you are all sick to death of me but right now I'm in need of some chat and laughs. So how has everyone's day been?, how is TTC coming along?. I had a rubbish day at work which was cheered up by reading posts on here and having giggles at the snarky replies and the OP's growing anger about how everyone here is evil and awful and we should all be rainbows and unicorns and blow smoke up their asses.

This was me last night. I usually get up and poke around the house to relax. I find if I stay in bed, I just get frustrated that I'm not falling asleep.
I turn off the pc, turn off the tv, clean or read. Something that doesn't involve my bed.

Tried this already tonight. I'm listening to soothing music on low volume that helps. I drift off eventually. I usually do this until my eyes start to close then I ditch music or phone. Not being able to sleep is awful . Just one of those nights. Maybe it was stress from work. Either way I may have that glass of wine now to relax..

After 30 minutes of tossing and turning I get up and read a boring book.
Uh oh.. So I've just found a box of chocolates that I'd forgotten about in the kitchen.. Bf mother bought me them a few days ago.. Wine and chocolate... This seems appealing..

I thought you said you spent the last two hours reading posts? That definitely means you are on your phone/computer. I would recommend not doing that. That always makes my mind race even more.
If my husband is snoring, I usually give him a little kick so he stops. If that doesn't work, I try to lay down somewhere else. Either in another bed or on the couch. Sometimes a change in location helps.

I have been. I put it down for maybe 30 mins then picked it up again. The music I listen too is on my phone. Thanks for advice. I should probably turn in after my glass of wine

This was me the other night too - stress from work... warning this is about to sound cheesy...
My mind kept thinking of shit I needed to take care of, or things I SHOULD have done but forgot about, and I decided to force myself into recalling a happy memory from childhood. I imagined my grandpa's house, how it smelled, what it looked like walking in late at night after a long drive to see him and finding his cookie jar then settling in on the couch by the heater - etc.
It actually helped, I eventually fell asleep and ended up having peaceful dreams that night.
But then sometimes, there's no overpowering this:

I try to concentrate on relaxing every muscle in my body starting from my toes and ending at my neck. That helps me shut off my mind a bit while I focus on those parts of my body. I also sleep with ear plugs in every night because my husbands snoring if awful.
I play the alphabet game when I can't make my brain shut up.
I pick a topic (cities, movies, books, music artists, etc.) and try to come up with something for every letter of the alphabet. If my thoughts wander, I make myself start over.
I rarely make it past the middle of the alphabet before I doze off.

FB Games. I have passed out many times to Candy Crush and Pet Rescue.
Agreed. Then again Candy Crush has also kept me up when I've been stuck!!
All the sleepless nights while DH was deployed certainly helped me pass a bunch of Candy Crush levels! Let's just say I'm in the high 600's now.... I'm also a fan of Netflix marathons until I can't keep my eyes open.
I try to relax my body. Sometimes just thinking sleep over and over again works. Sometimes trying to relax focusing on my body starting at my toes to my head. If none of that works I either take a Benadryl or Tylenol. Tylenol because sometimes I don't realize that my body hurts (I have bad knees).
Sometimes when I find myself tossing and turning for a while, I put socks on. It seems to really work. This will do you no good if you already wear socks to bed, but in case you don't...
I usually get up and lay on the couch and watch Friends. It's usually because I can't stop thinking and 1-2 episodes I'm falling asleep. I never turn on the computer or look at my phone, because it will make it worse.
Actually last night I got up at 2:30 ate some leftover chicken parmesan and watched friends. Damn progesterone is making me not sleep and hungry.
If I can't sleep I end up watching Bridesmaids or Pitch Perfect. I don't know what it is. As much as I love those movies I am ready for sleep afterward

I'm one of those people who starts thinking about everything I have to do at 3 am. When this happens I will close my eyes and force all thoughts out of my head by picturing a wall of blackness. If something starts creeping in I mentally shove it out. It works for me and I've had others tell me it helps them. When I teach a Yoga class I will use guided visualization for svasana because most people will make a grocery list or think about picking up the kids when they are supposed to be taking time for themselves. This involves giving them a mental picture of a beach or a waterfall and describing the sounds they should hear and the things they should see/focus on. This helps to push all outside thoughts away and give your brain a chance to wind down. Might not work for you, but it's worth a shot
On a related note, does anyone experience insomnia in the days leading up to ovulation? I have noticed this trend in the last couple of cycles. For instance, I work up at 1:30 a.m. and couldn't get back to sleep until 2:45 a.m. yesterday. Also, I've been waking up earlier.

Sex. Always sex. If I can't sleep, may as well have DH join me in not sleeping and make it more fun.
Also, it is strange to me that people are bothered by the snoring of their SO. I have gotten so used to DH's snoring that it didn't keep me up after the first 6mo or so of us living together. It just seems weird to think that it should be keeping me awake.
- Then again, DH and SD both snore, and both talk in their sleep. Usually to each other. So, I have learned to adapt and sleep.
