Throwing food overboard

Anyone have any good tips or ideas on how to handle this?

Ever since we've started solids (BLW style), he has thrown food overboard and fed it to the dog. When I was a nanny, the girl I watched did this as well but grew out of it without much intervention from me. But, my little guy is getting much more persistent with the throwing. I put the dog out now when he eats so that temptation isn't there, but food is still going flying. Especially if it's something he's not particularly into. (He has started doing this at restaurants too!)

Any ideas?

Re: Throwing food overboard

  • Is he sitting in a high chair or in a booster at the table? I think sitting at the table could help a bit. I would also let him play at putting food into an empty dish or container that you sit on the table. This might help distract him since it is more challenging to do that over chucking food on the floor. I also let LO do this with water. He pours water from cup to bowl. It is a messy business, but my main intent is to keep LO at the table longer since he eats more that way.
Curious to hear what others have to say too...

  • We have this issue and we don't have a dog. He seems to do it on when he is done and wants down.
We have started to take away what us left when he does this and just let him sit at the table a bit longer so he eventually will understand that throwing his food will not get him down faster.
I have no advice on how to curb it though :(

  • She throws her food or hands what's left to me when she's done. No advice. Hoping she grows out of it. She does well with a fork, so maybe try that. Any plates or bowls wind up getting dumped onto her tray.

  • I take DS's food away. He screams. I give it back. He eats 5 bites and then starts feeding the dog again. Repeat. Repeat.

  • Seems like I'm definitely not alone here! :) I think we will try smaller portions tonight like @nech0606‌ suggested. We do overwhelm him with food probably. @coffeeandbooks‌ - he's in a booster with a tray. We will try putting him up to the table tonight to see if it curbs it at all.

  • Em did that it the longest time too. We still have to put the dog downstairs while we eat or the food is immediately thrown off.
Now, he only does it once he's full. As soon as he starts throwing the food, we take him out and the meal is over.

  • This happens here too. LO doesn't like to sit still for a minute, which includes meal times. She takes a few bites and then whips the food off repeatedly. What works for us, and may not work for others, is to let her down at that point. She likes to run around a little, and then comes back for more bites. She actually eats way more this way, which is the main reason I do this.

  • We're dealing with it too, for months. She doesn't just toss it either, she will use a sweeping motion to send it flying. I usually take her tray away when this happens. It's not helping. Sorry I have no advice. Only to commiserate.

  • Putting him at the table and giving him less food at a time seemed to help! I hope it wasn't a fluke, but only 2 pieces of watermelon got tossed. :) Thanks!

  • @mommatotwo2 we are in the exact same boat! It is a full arm sweep of anything that is on the tray. She is in a high chair with tray but we give her her own plate along with fork and spoon. All that does is give her something more to throw.

-Does anyone have anything they put under the chair to make clean up easier? We have tile so it is not that hard to wipe up but didn't know if anyone had tried a floor mat or anything under there chair.

  • I'm no help with the food throwing cuz it's happening here too. But @babyo52‌ try a mess mat under the highchair like this: https://m.toysrus.com/skava/static/product.html?type=TRU_product_us&url=/product/index.jsp?productId=24128406&domain=http://www.toysrus.com

  • Mine does this too..its usually towards the end when hes full so I try and take the tray away and then give him one piece by piece to see if he wants it if he throws it hes done. Nothing else has really seemed to help.

I have to put our dog in her crate or outside when O is eating. Afterwards I let her clean up the big pieces the wipe down our hardwood after. Our dog had never had a morsel of 'people food' until O started eating solids. I guess it has its advantages.

We don't use it much anymore but we got a large blue plastic sheet thing from Amazon to put under the high chairs to keep the floor clean. Ours is bigger than you may need though, we needed one big enough to cover the ground under two high chairs.
