Putting LO back to sleep

Hey ladies!

At night, it's fairly easy (most nights) to put my LO down to sleep. Swaddle, bottle, rock to sleep. But after her night feeding, I always have a hard time getting her back down even though we follow the same routine. When she does go back down, it will be for 45 minutes of quiet sleep and then she has noisy restless sleep for the next few hours. Her eyes are closed but she wakes herself up and goes back to sleep a few times. I'm always so tired in the mornings because I never go back to sleep because she's so noisy and I'm waiting for her to wake up with every peep. She's currently in a bassinet in our room.

Does anyone else's LO do this? Is that restless noisy sleep really sleep? Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get her back more comfortably and in a deeper sleep?

Our boy is a noisy sleeper too. We transferred him to his crib in his room 2 weeks ago because we just weren't sleeping.

We'd think he was awake, and try to re-paci and rock, meanwhile he's fast asleep just making noise.

That's all I have for you unfortunately!

@BPer‌ how old is your LO? Gia is currently 6 weeks so I'm thinking of moving her into her room within the next two weeks so I can get some sleep!

@sharmon1317‌ hope you get some rest too! Noisy little critters!

Have you tried a white noise machine? It might help you sleep better too since baby's little noises will be muffeled.

@TwizzyG‌ I have. I feel like it wakes her up if I leave it on too long.

Moving DD to her own room helped since she's super noisy too. Have you tried putting LO down without rocking, maybe it's too stimulating in MOTN?

I have DD in a bassinet next to my bed and she was doing the same thing, the 3am morning feeding she would be wide awake. Now once she starts fussing I pick her up, I don't turn on the lights, I don't unswaddle her and I don't change her diaper. When she is done eating I pat her back for 1-2 minutes and then I put her back in the bassinet whether or not she burps. Once she is down I pat her butt for a minute and then she is asleep.

Last night I ended up having to change her because she had a poopy diaper and she was wide awake after. It took me about 45 minutes to get her back to sleep which was frustrating.

I would also like the magic answer for this problem lol!

DD HATES being swaddled.. occasionally she will deal but not with her arms in. Her arms wake her up, she only likes the paci 50% of the time and isn't a fan of her crib. I have a hard time telling whether or not she's awake because she can be so noisy! Sometimes I can stick the paci in a get an extra 45-60min of more sleep out of her but that's not the norm.

She's been sleeping in our room alternating between her swing and RnP.

ETA: your def not alone with this problem

These are totally normal sleep patterns for infants. It sucks, but they will outgrow it and sleep for longer stretches as their brains mature. It gets much better by 3 months - just in time for the 14wk sleep regression.

My LO is a noisy sleeper too & hates being swaddled. We moved his RnP to his bedroom around 4wks because he's so noisy. We have a white noise machine in his bedroom that plays continuously at night, so that covers the little squeaks over the monitor. We got the cheapest video monitor we could find so when I hear him at night i can turn on the video without going in there to see if he is Really waking up or just making noises in his sleep.

When he wakes at night I change him, feed him, turn off the dim light as soon as he done with bottle, burp, rock for 5 minutes, and put in RnP. If he wakes or is still awake when I put him down I turn on his mobile which is attached to his crib (RnP right next to crib). He watches it (has a light projected on an umbrella and low music) for a few and eventually falls asleep.

I used to put him back down & as soon as I saw him flail his arms & make some noise I would go back in to rock him to sleep. It took me a few weeks to realize that if I left him he'd fall asleep in a few min. It's almost like he just squirms to get comfy. :)

This. DD does not need to be rocked, patted, bounced, etc. during MOTN feeds. She eats, then falls asleep. If I add anything else, she gets restless. She's only awake for 10 minutes, which is the amount of time it takes her to drain one boob.

Thank you girls for all the suggestions! Last night was much better, I started the night with a noise machine and when she woke up I changed her in the dark, fed her, and she fell asleep eating.

The noise machine remained on the entire night and she slept from 11-2:45 and then from 3:30-6:30 and is now sleeping again!

@TwizzyG‌ thanks for the suggestion! I thought it would make her restless but actually helped us ALL sleep better!!

DS has changed so much, it's hard to say that any one thing has made a major difference on its own.

Things that have improved sleep: swaddle (though I have not used it in at least a week.. We may be over needing it, but if he is ever restless/fussy/flailing that is my first step).
I can't say enough good things about white noise for calming baby. I was a major skeptic at first and thought it would be wakeful and distracting. Nope. We use the static sound as loud as it will go, then turn it down a little once he is in deeper sleep.
DS takes a paci, and prefers the Soothie.

Finally, I know this isn't for everyone, but for a while there I just couldn't stay awake during our 3am feeding. We started co-sleeping on the couch from 3-6 am and sometimes longer. One night I decided to bring him from the crib to the bed instead of the couch and we've basically been co sleeping ever since. I feel like I get a full nights sleep. DS was an extremely noisy sleeper prone to startle waking. When we cosleep I don't need the swaddle, sound, or paci. DS wakes to feed, I change him, nurse laying down, and he immediately goes back to sleep.

We still do naps in the crib, and I put him to bed alone around 9pm, so I am hoping to transition back to the crib once we don't need a regular feeding between 12-5am.

My LO sleeps great too when we co sleep...as much as I love sleeping next to her, I don't want to form any bad habits especially since I'm trying to transition her into her own room in two weeks! But I do love the middle of the night cuddles :)

Mine is snuggled in next to me right now :) I have partially co-slept with all four of mine. They start off in their RNP/ PNP and once they woke up to feed I would latch them on laying down and go back to sleep. Learned with my first it was the best way for us to get max sleep.

I use this one too! Vacuum mode! LO loves it. I didn't know they actually sold a machine. I'm going to get that so my phone isn't a prisoner anymore

I hope it works for you both! We have had ours in the family for about 7 years. It's was originally my moms, she loves sound machines and as soon as I had Lili last year she handed it down to me. We never had a single issue with it, neither did my mom. I like it because of all of the different sounds and it can get pretty loud. Let me know how it works out.

We also use white noise on a regular basis. We too use Sleep Pillow app. The iPad runs all night with it and barely drains the battery. WN and swaddle are our saviors.

I got the Homedics Soundspa Sound Machine (Bed Bath and Beyond and used a 20% off coupon...mad it about $16). It's awesome cause it both plugs in and uses batteries so it's portable if you need it to be. And you don't have to leave your phone with LO like with a phone app.

Some of you have suggested swaddling to help lo get to sleep. Mine has been swaddled from day one and is prone to startling awake if he's not. Any suggestions on when to begin to NOT swaddle hkm? He'll be 8 weeks on Tuesday and currently sleeps in a bassinet in our room.

By 3-4 months when they lose the startle reflex is usually a good time to try to not swaddle, or whenever they start rolling over if that comes first. I plan on ditching the swaddle around then unless he seems ready sooner. I've tried to lose the swaddle for naps but it's still kind of hit or miss so for now I mostly swaddle him for both naps in his crib and at night.

Some babies like to be swaddled even when they're mobile but I think it would make me nervous that they might roll over and be unable to get themselves back.
