I grew up saying pop, but when I was a server several years ago I started saying soda because I thought it sounded more professional. So now I primarily use soda, because I still think pop is a weird name for a beverage. Sometimes pop slips out though.
Coke is the generic name. Soda is sometimes acceptable. It's easy to differentiate because Coca Cola is referred to as "Coke" but some is referred to as "a coke". It makes perfect sense.
I get soda and I get pop, but I just can not understand calling it all coke. That'd be like calling all beef products steak. Or all fruit apples. Makes no sense.
I totally get you, but what do you call the thing you blow your nose in?
Soft drink.
(Hard drinks are alcoholic - eg hard iced tea)
My mom said soft drink. My dad might but he doesn't drink them so I'm not sure. DH says soft drink or cold drink. Because in India alcohol is a very separate thing, so in most cases the drink coming out of the refrigerator must be "soft." I say soda.
