April 2013 Moms

talking or lack there of.

I was just curious if anyone else little ones are not talking or talking a lot yet.  Cavin is 16 months and does not say much of anything at all.  He can hear, in fact I swear  he has super natural hearing, you try to sneak open a bag of cookies and out of nowhere he shows up at the kitchen gate.

He understands everything we ask or tell him, he goes and gets his jammies, socks, shoes, etc..  He does a lot of mumbling/jabbering but nothing that are words per say.  He will come to us and be throwing his arms every direction just babbling away and even laughing after he jabbers something.  He knows what he is saying but we don't.   My husband says he speaks perfect Portuguese, problem is we don't speak Portuguese.

We go to story time at the library every week and there are kids there just a month or two older that say quite a few words.
I am a stay at home mom and I home school his 12 year old sister so he is around people who talk to him all day and we do not talk baby talk.

anyone else have a non talker?

Re: talking or lack there of.

  • James will be 17 months on Friday.

He can sign "more" and "all done," and he babbles nonstop.  "real" words are "uh oh", "whoa", "dada" and that is pretty much it.... he refuses to say mama, and seems to use "dada" for everything,

I'm trying not to worry about it -- if there are concerns at his 18 month appt, the doc will let us know.

  • Sounds just like Rhys. He understands but doesn't really attempt to say words, although he does babble a lot. I will try so hard to get him to say ball or book and he doesn't even try, his on,y words for pretty much forever were mama and dada, just literally in the last two days he has one more word... Kit-eh (kitty). He has understood the word kitty for months (we have two cats) and I just heard him say it for the first time yesterday (and again today). I was really worried at his 15 month appt, and the pediatrician said she really doesn't worry until two years. So I just keep trying and hopefully he'll talk before long! He has been late on every. Single. Milestone, so I can't say that I'm that surprised.

  • Thank  you ladies this puts my mind at ease.   I think I would be more worried if he acted as if he didn't hear us or didn't seem to understand.   He does follow short 2-3 word sentences.
Like Amanda I work on getting him to talk but he just looks at me and smiles.   I swear I hear him say pony when he looks out the window to the ponies paddock.   He will bring me a toy and say "this" and I will tell him what it is but other than that it is a lot of just chatter.

The thing is we are all "concerned" with out babies lack of talking... then in a few months we will be posting "how do we get them to be quiet for 5 minutes" LOL

  • Same here. I know he can hear. He follows directions (when he's not being a stubborn toddler) and can hear a can open or a dog bark from a mile away. He's been trying more lately, although not super successfully. He consistently says dada, buhbuh (bye bye), aah (all done), bobo (puppy) ba (ball) and eye (hi). Like I said, he's got a long way to go but the fact that he is using the same sounds to refer to things is reassuring to me. My MIL keeps trying to calm me down by telling me Jesse's (DH) first words were, "the keys are in the door," at 2 years old. Is being a late talker genetic?

  • Not sure if it is genetic... My oldest son (from previous relationship) was a late talker, so late in fact we kept getting his ears tested thinking they missed something but he was fine just didn't have anything to say.
Our daughter talked early and hasn't shut up since, the only time she is quiet is when she is asleep.  (she is 12 years old)
So not sure on when our youngest son will talk.  I have a feeling that when he decides to he will just start and never look back.   Like everything else he does, when he started walking he did the same thing, he just took off.  He never needed or wanted us to help him, same way with eating he wants nothing to do with food he cant feed himself.

  • Noah doesn't say much. He has a few words, but the only ones he uses consistently are "no", "dada", "mama", "Ba" (what he calls his sister) and "car." At this age, I think it's still pretty normal. I know my pediatrician's office wants to see them have at least 5-10 words at the 18 month check, but that's still 2 months away for us.

Remember, all babies are very different. My daughter was putting together 2 word sentences by 16 months and had a vocabulary of literally hundreds of words. By those standards, my son is waaaaay behind but I really try not to compare them.

  • My son said like 10 words around a year and then barely said anything until right before he turned two and I swear he just started saying like 10 new words a day every day for two weeks. He is now an extremely chatty boy with a large vocabulary at 3.

  • Cavin does plenty of babbling.  He will stand in front of you just babbling away even stopping to laugh and keep on babbling..... we just don't know what he is saying.

And if you do not respond in some way shape or form he will stand in front of you blank faced as if he is thinking.. "umm did you not just hear me?"

  • Mila only has mama, dada and Ava. Nothing else but she "talks" nonstop and has great receptive language (follows simple directions). You're not alone! It's weird for me since Ava was an early talker. Try not to worry!

  • My DS doesn't say much: car, bus, dog, and go. He does lots of unintelligible babbling. But he understands all kinds of stuff and when I open his books and ask him things like "Where is the cat/dog/pig?" he will point to it. And he follows directions surprisingly well ("Go get your shoes," "Bring me the ball") and can even feed the dog with minimal assistance from me. Yet he still doesn't say mama or dada!

  • That is Cavin, he follows instructions surprisingly well.  I can ask him to go get is pajamas, socks, a ball, a book, etc.. and he will do it.

He says dada, mama, ack (snack),ba (bath), uh oh, ohh yea, but that is about it.  Although I am afraid that once he lets loose and starts talking he will be like his older sister and talk non stop and we will constantly fear what he is going to say and to whom. :)
