So far, first grade is going well. DD1 is walking in from the front door to her class by herself (although she prefers to wait for someone else who is in her class) and coming out without being walked out, which is different than kindergarten when the teacher would walk them out to parents. She always comes running out with a huge grin on her face and it makes me happy.
As I was getting ready this morning, DD2 huffed in saying that she hated the outfit choices I'd laid out. So DD1 offered to help and went through her own drawers and DD2's, making suggestions on what DD2 could wear, and found a combination that DD2 liked. Right now she's doing better than I am on reading her little sister's preferences!
DS has made it through 1.5 weeks without any signs of a repeating the transition from hell. We did a play date with a friend from last year and he was right in there holding his own with 3 1st grade boys (he only knew one from last year) for 2 hours. Today we had an impromptu play date with the kid he's been playing with at recess. It was only 30 minutes but they were having a blast. He's been a little bit more willing to work in stuff at home like sight words.
We found out DD's class assignment for next year, and I talked to her teacher on the phone. She's taught inclusion classes and has worked with lots of kids with SN. She sounded really nice.
So, I met with DS teacher Tuesday afternoon to talk about things in kindergarten so far and one positive thing she said is that he is seeking out social interaction. He doesn't always do it appropriately, but his desire is there!
DS1 had his first dentist appointment yesterday and he did awesome! He was in my lap and had the weighted blanket on him and was watching the ipad but he let them count his teeth and do a little brushing! All with no meltdown! Woohoo!
DS1: 4/15/2011
Dx: ASD, SPD and receptive and expressive speech delay at 21 months
We've had our first two days of in-home therapy immediately after my boys get home from full-day Kindergarten and so far, X has handled it a lot better than I anticipated. He's a trooper. He was even a good sport about the Twister game his SLP had him play today, and normally he hates that kind of stuff.
Tonight was the open house at his new school. He did pretty well there, though he was exhausted (hasn't been sleeping well at night the last couple nights.
Tonight before bed I told him I thought he did really well tonight at his new school and that I thought the teachers and kids really liked him. HUGE smile. So I followed up with how I thought he was going to do great this year and gave him a big hug and kiss.
Man do I love that kid. Moments like this just make me wish so badly that we could communicate more
