We put extra money into her savings account as her birthday present. Did the same with DD1. We also ask that party guests not bring gifts.

that said, block sets, water table, sand table, and board books are things both of my girls were/are into at 12 months.

My daughter Lux turns 1 in December and I am having someone make a quilt for her using special onesies or clothing items from her first year!  Cool idea and a way to save the cute clothes!  I am using her onesies from her first holidays, etc. Good luck!

plastic dishes with the suction cups to stick on the highchair
    puzzles/board books
    water/sand table
    cozy coupe/other riding toy
    mega blocks/duplos

Honestly, we have so much family buying her toys that we are just buying her some shoes and a winter coat. And we got her a cozy coupe from an online gargage sale site and are repainting it to be a batmobile ;)
Haha!  We're doing the same thing and giving him his "first car" for his bday.  My girlfriend gave me her old one and we're making it over with a Captain America sticker and paint job.
