how long were your kids in high chairs?

DD'S high chair is broken, and I'm trying to decide what to do about it. We have a travel one that clips to a dining chair so we are using that in the meantime but it doesn't sit her high enough.

She is 16 months, and if she will be in a chair for quite a while yet I'll get a new one...so how long were your kiddos in high chairs?

  • I started my son in a booster at 18 months. Mostly because he just pushed the highchair into walls and stuff (it was on wheels) and it took up so much room. He loves eating at the real table with us and his highchair actually had a booster option so I ddin't have to buy anything.

DS just turned 19 months and this is what I'm thinking of doing. He's always trying to push it through the hall.

  • DD is 18 months. She's in a restaurant style high chair. If something happened to it, I would put her in a booster now. She's big enough.

  • We did a high chair from 6-12 months until we got a booster. Dd was in a booster at six months-we skipped the high chair entirely

  • It's hard for me to remember exactly when, but I want to say by 12 months she refused high chairs and boosters all together.  She hated being contained.

  • Hmm okay maybe we will switch to a booster! Thanks everyone!

DS has been in this booster seat since we started solids around 6 months.  It sits up high, and is super easy to clean.

We have the same one and DS (6 months is using it). Our DD (2) is the one we purchased it for, but she has become possessive of her high chair and doesn't want to her brother to sit in it. Honestly, I like having him in the booster anyway as it is easier to clean than our high chair.
This is what we have for travel and it doesn't sit up high enough at our table. Hopefully I can find one that is a bit higher.

  • Around 18 months I switched Z to a booster. Takes up less room and super easy to clean!
  • I had DS2 in the Space Saver Fisher Price high chair at 14 mos. when I had him evaluated for speech. The developmental therapist who came to our house, recommended that I put him in a booster instead because it was too supportive of his core to allow him use his own muscles when he's sitting.  He didn't have a core strength issue, it just wasn't recommended. I could have converted it to a booster but I have never liked the way the Space Saver butted up to my dining table so I bought the Bumbo Booster. He's a smaller kid so I was looking for one to sit him up higher.

  • We have a fischer price booster chair.  It has a tray, but we took it off early and have had her sit at the table with us from the beginning.  She still needs the booster to reach the table so I bought a second one at a garage so for dd2.  I imagine they will use them for a while yet.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

DS is still in his at 3 but we have a Tripp trapp so basically it's a wooden seat with straps pulled up to the dining room table. I still use the strap because he slipped off a while back and scared us pretty badly. At restaurants he sits in a chair with no booster or high chair. Usually he kneels so he's high enough up to the table.
Same here, we never had a traditional high chair.
  • DS sat in a high chair until 2 and DD sat in it until 16-18 months. She hated it so we started using a booster at the table and she was much happier.

  • We got the travel seat out tonight and had to put 2x4s underneath to get her high enough. Guess I will start looking for a taller booster tomorrow!

  • We never had traditional high chairs. We just did stokke tripp traps, which grow with the child. Emma is still in hers at 5, Julia used hers until nearly 6 when we passed it down to Drew. I've also converted them to the "adult" setting for family holidays when the kids were sitting at the kids table and we needed extra adult chairs. We still occasionally strap Drew in, usually only if dinner is on the table cooling and we want to keep him from running after it (so we strap him in out of reach of the table).
