Scooting, now crawling

Hey Ladies,

My DD is almost 11 months and for the past two months she has become quite the butt scooter getting from place to place.  We thought this would lead to crawling but now I'm starting to think she might skip crawling and go right to walking eventually although she shows no interest in pulling up.  In addition to scooting, she does roll both ways, army crawls backwards and can get into sitting position so she is mobile.  I think this scooting is her version of crawling.  Anyone else had/have a "long term"scooter and if so did it lead to crawling?  DD1 didn't crawl until 10.5 mo so I'm not sure if I just have late crawlers or what to think.  Thanks!

Re: Scooting, now crawling

  • DS crawled, but I just attended a co-worker's daughter's first bday party, and she is still using "scooting" as her form of crawling. She just recently started pulling up to stand and will happily take some steps while assisted, but it looks as though she's very comfortable with her current crawling process. I remember talking to our ped since DS army crawled backwards as well before he learned to crawl in the "traditional" sense - he said that as long as they've figure out forward mobility, they don't care how they manipulate their little bodies to get there!

None of the bum scooters I've known (and I've known a good 10+) became crawlers...until after they were walking and they were playfully crawling around.  Bum scooting IS their crawling.  Crawling is merely a way of moving around.  It is NOT a developmental milestone and it is perfectly fine for children to skip crawling altogether.

The LARGE majority of the bum scooters I've known had BIG heads.  It was much harder for them to crawl because they had more weight in the head which while crawling is teetered away from their core body and it was much more work not to face plant.  Scooter kept them better balanced.

  • I know a baby who scoots and does not crawl, but she does not like to bear weight on her legs at all, and there is concern about her at 14 months.  If your baby likes to be held upright, can put weight on her legs, and maybe we likes to be walked around while you hold her hands, I would not worry.  If your baby's body looks odd or complains when you give her the chance to stand supported, I would ask your pedi about it.
