My doctor just called and said after a second round of blood work that LO has elevated liver enzymes and requires an ultrasound as a next step. Has anyone had any experience with this with any of your children? If so what was the outcome?
Update: August 7th I got the date of the ultrasound after his 6 month appointment today it will be Aug 27th. I asked the dr what may cause it she said she wouldn't know unless she saw that there was liver damage. But she couldn't feel the liver which is good because it's not enlarged. The ultrasound will make sure of that. I made the huge mistake of googling it after I said I wouldn't, when I got home today. I have to admit I'm kind of freaking out because one of the results was a fatal disease called niemann-pick. I have to put this out of my mind before I go crazy.
Update: August 27th G went to his ultrasound today. The ultrasound tech said that she could see no issues in any of his internal organs so I feel relived but it still doesn't explain why his liver enzymes are double what they consider normal. She said we may have to see a specialist if we can't figure out what's causing it. I'll hear from my dr next week and he will have another round of bloodwork. Thank you ladies for your continued support.
@penguin173 No on the last appointment she said she didn't know what would cause it but they were going to do another round of bloodwork to see if it was an error or fluke. And then ultrasound if still elevated. I'm assuming that the ultrasound is to check the liver?
Thanks for the hugs ladies, I hope it's nothing serious
@KatyBriggs we brought him to emerge when he was vomiting blood and we later found out the blood was coming from me. They did bloodwork at that time just to make sure everything was ok and that's when they found that. Thank you for the ultrasound advice! All this makes me nervous. He seems healthy though otherwise.
@mamajop might not be for a couple weeks, the dr is supposed to call with the appointment. Which reminds me I have to tell them I'm going on vacation mid August
Well, I'm glad they didn't see anything amiss but I'm sorry you're still left with no answers. I hope the next round of bloodwork shows everything back to normal.
I'm glad there were no obvious problems. I don't have any direct experience with this because my LO has not had bloodwork.
However, in my family we all seem to have somewhat unexplained higher liver enzymes, never SUPER high but above normal. My mom, sister, brother and I have all had this at different times. My doctor figured out mine was caused by the birth control pill, which came back to haunt me again when I was pregnant and diagnosed with cholestasis which included high liver enzymes again. Yet again as soon as the hormones are out of me, I'm fine again. Obviously this is not the issue with your LO, but my sister was actually diagnosed with celiac disease and they said that is often associated with high liver enzymes. After a year of a gluten free diet, she is back to normal. My mom and brother still have the high liver enzymes and no clear reason for it.
Have they mentioned celiac to you? I'm assuming your baby isn't eating much, if any, gluten, but are you breastfeeding? I'm just guessing here- no medical training, but it's something else to consider. Good luck!
@RedSoxGirl10 thank you so much for your perspective, it's nice to actually hear from someone who has elevated liver enzymes. I will mention celiac to my dr. When I googled elevated liver enzymes about 2 dozen things came up, but so far my doctor has been just talking about liver damage but it seems like other things can cause this. Maybe a specialist will be the best to talk to. I guess we will see. @greenbunny79 I've had quite a few ultrasounds and none of them have ever said anything to me before but this one was at the hospital and maybe she was a radiologist and I just assumed she was a tech because that's what I'm used to. She seemed to be very confident in what she was saying.
@tangerinemachine it's definitely worth a try- it's just another blood test like you said, there could be something causing it and why not figure out what it is!

Hopefully it's just a fluke and nothing is going on.
