Question for Those Taking Progesterone

I found out my levels are kind of low, 6.2 and called my OB to see if they would give me a prescription. (I've never taken it before)

They want to give me something vaginally, but my insurance won't cover it. When I asked if it was something I could take orally, they said that wasn't the preferred option. So their best suggestion was that I pay for it out of pocket. (and that it was expensive)
I'm going to put a call in to my insurance this afternoon.

I guess my question has anyone ever taken it orally or in another form?
I'm losing my patience with my OB's office and I'm wondering if I wouldn't be better off going somewhere else.

I take the shots ( ivf w/ twins)  and it isn't covered... it isn't that expensive considering how important it is.  The vaginal ones are cheaper than the shots!  Call around and get prices from several pharmacies.

    proper progesterone support is essential!!

  • I pay out of pocket for the suppositories. It sucks but its worth it to not have a miscarriage. 6 is a low number I would be getting them today if it was me! Good luck with whatever you do :)

  • I take vaginal progesterone suppositories.  I've never heard of oral ones, only vaginal and intramuscular.  The prescription that I use is called Endometrim and it usually costs $130 a box.  But ask your OB office if they have a coupon, some do and will send it through with the prescription.  Hope this helps and good luck!!

I take vaginal suppositories. I had to pay out of my pocket since my insurance also doesn't cover it. It cost me $130 for 45 days.  My dr told me after this I should be fine and shouldn't have to take it any longer afterwards.  I would get it, it puts your mind at ease a little bit knowing that you are doing what you can to help. The $ is worth it.  Like a pp said, it is one of many costs that you are beginning with your LO.  :)  xox  GL and hope this all helps.

Just saw that the pp just said almost the same thing.  Lol

I take progesterone injections, I prefer them over the suppositories. The suppositories made me itchy and I kept thinking I was getting yeast infection, they also drove me INSANE, I prefer the injects but they do hurt since they're IM

Before I met my deductible, the suppositories were about $600 a month but the inject was about $145

I know some pharmacies offer coupons so I would ask about that too. You prob won't get the coupons using Walgreens or CVS, but try specialty pharmacies like Conception or Freedom Fertility.

ETA: I had a 90ct of the suppositories.

  • If your levels are that low, I would pay out of pocket for it. Honestly its way more important to get the meds than it is to worry about the cost. I would still try to fight with your insurance company but pay for it in the meantime.

  • I'm prescribed progesterone and had the same problem with my insurance.
    1. I take the oral pulls vaginally and thy work great (little greasy - but I feel very moisturizer down there). They were covered do I didn't have to pony up $300.
    2. Under the new health care law, all fertility treatments should be covered without out of pocket. The reason it's "not covered" is because it's primary prescribed purpose is to assist with discomforts of menopause. Buy the pills/suppositories, have your doctor write a note of medical necessity, marked urgent to your insurance company and fax it to them. Once they approve it, ask them to pay you back. (That's what my insurance company told me to do before we found the oral pills that were covered - Walgreens is awesome for fixing that problem).

Hope you have as good of luck as I did.

I hope you went ahead and got the supps. Mine at a local compounding pharmacy were $55 with no insurance for 30 days. That's all I needed to get me to 10 weeks. I've gotten them from freedom fertility and walgreens before and neither place was over $100.
