Honestly I think it's a genetic thing. You will either get them or you won't! I never applied any of those preventive stretch mark lotions and I never got them. Good luck!
None. Look at your mom's tummy if she got it youll most likely get it. Used all creams that could prevent it but my belly was covered in stretchmarks by month 8. GL
When I was pregnant with my first, I used Vitamin E Body Butter (from The Body Shop) and mixed pure vitamin e in with it. I put it on religiously. I also used extra virgin olive oil routinely. Messy sheets, but I did not get a single stretch mark on my tummy. And I gained almost 70 pounds. Im regularly 103-107. So either Im just not getting stretch marks on my tummy (I got them when I was younger on my hips and bum) or it worked.

Looks like everyone here touched what is needed to be said. Genetics. You can use all the lotion you want, you will get them if you are meant to have them. My mom didn't get a single stretch mark except on her boobs. I have them everywhere it feels like. My thighs, butt, a few on my stomach and boobs. According to my mom, my dad has stretch marks pretty bad on his thighs and sides, so I guess that's where my gene came from.

I'm adopted & my birth mother & father are dead. Not everyone has their birth parents as a reference.
You are correct that stretch marks are genetic though.
This is my second pregnancy (if you look at my sig), and I had tons of stretch marks my first. I said the picture is a friend, and she is. I am sorry that yes, I have a site, but I mean what I say. I tried a lot of stuff my first pregnancy and nothing worked. This one does. I can remove the post if you have issues with it. I thought I would be nice to let others know about it.
Everything I read said it was genetic so I didnt care to buy expensive lotions. I used an $8 jar of coconut oil as some of my family swore by it and I didn't get any. I think it is genetic but what you CAN DO is not gain too much weight. Regardless of genetics, you have a much higher chance of getting them if you gain 60 lbs then if you gain 30.
I slathered on the butta religiously, drank 100 oz of water a day, and still got some stretch marks. They don't bother me at all. It's the mark of a woman who has given birth.
So what for the women that get them that have no children or those that have kids but no stretch marks?
If stretch marks are the "mark of a woman who has given birth," I want to know where my fucking baby is, because I have a nice set of purple stretch marks on my stomach, boobs and hips. Oh wait that's right, mine are from gaining 35 lbs from 3 IVF cycles. Not all stretch marks are some badge of honor for growing a tiny human.

Yeah, that last statement is pretty ignorant and offensive. Fail.
Actually, there are probably some nutritional things you can do, but to start during pregnancy may be a bit late. Zinc, hydration, gelatin, and adequate fatty acids all contribute to skin integrity and can theoretically prevent stretch marks. Most creams are going to be a waste of money though.
I don't get the hate for the poster who said its the mark of a woman who has given birth. For her, it is the mark of her babies. If shes cool with it, why do so many other have an issue???
Her overall message was to just accept it as part of the process of growing a baby since the OP was concerned about...shocking....getting stretchmarks during pregnancy.

It's condescending to those that have them for other reasons and those that do not have them, either because they have good genetics or because they have not carried a child.
The mark a mother is having a child that calls you mom. It does not matter if you have stretch marks or not, or if they came from your uterus or not, or even if they came from the your DNA or not.
Your overall message gets lost when you insult a lot of people.
I've ALWAYS wondered about that!! I have light stretch marks on my hips/buttocks from growing and people seem to say that if you have them from that then you'll get them on your tummy too. Thanks for that!!
I did extra virgin olive oil during my last pregnancy and have no stretch marks. My mother has major stretch marks but I don't have any. They do say it is genetic but it doesn't hurt to at least try to prevent them.
Not preventable. But if you get them, DON'T scratch them if they're itchy! Use moisturizers and creams like there's no tomorrow. I scratched mine and now they're swollen, ugly and some even have little cuts on them.
I use Palmers Tummy Butter every night. I heard it will make the skin more elastic and it may prevent some of the stretch marks, which is what Im hoping for. My mom does not have them but my sister has major ones. She never used anything on her belly though.

Palmer's helps relieve the itchiness and dryness of the marks, and maybe helps improve the look of stretch marks. But it won't prevent them.
Nothing will make your skin more "elastic". Unless, of course, one of your parents is a rubber band.
By all means rub lotion on your belly- the skin gets itchy when stretched out. Just don't expect the lotion to prevent stretch marks. It is what it is.
