Mat leave and work

With all the talk about going back to work I'm wondering, what does everyone do for work? And how much maternity leave are you taking?

  • Labor RN taking all 12 weeks that I can.
  • Director of Events for a venue. 10 weeks total (6 paid- rest combo of sick days. 2 of the weeks I'll be doing some work from home). Wishing I would have taken 12 now. LO is 6 weeks and I'm finally starting to enjoy my time off with her (not that I didn't enjoy first part but I'm finally doing more things and getting the hang of it).
  • General Manager for a restaurant.

I get 8 weeks for having LO (c-section) plus I'm taking and additional 12 weeks for bonding time. In CA it's all covered/protected leave.

Legal admin. I was temp before baby so no paid leave and they just offered me a perm position. I can start whenever so I'm starting when LO is 9 1/2 weeks. Part of me wants to take longer but we need the money. Part of me can't wait to be back on a routine and have a paycheck.

I'm an RN and work for a family practice clinic. I originally planned on taking 12 weeks, but all of my FMLA got used up 6 wks after LO was born bc I was put on bedrest 6 weeks before he was born. So then I got 8 weeks of leave since I had a c section but I spoke with my boss and got an additional 4 wks- so I got my 12 wks after all! I hate that I had to use FMLA for my bedrest and had to get special approval to get the leave I wanted/needed after he was born. But I'm very grateful for how things turned out since I know a lot of people don't get enough mat leave.
  • Project assistant - 1 year paid leave (half government paid and other half employer top up). Very grateful to be home for a year with LOs.
  • Teacher. I'm staying home from now until unknown... :-D

  • Worked for myself as a government and public relations consultant. I transitioned clients to a new consultant when my pregnancy went high risk. So I qualify for nothing. In Canada if I had been working in a more traditional environment I would have gotten a year. Now I'll go back when and if it makes sense.

Don't they have something set up for self employed? I thought you had to pay into EI?
  • I'm an accountant. I am taking 12 weeks.

  • Research scientist. Took 6w off when I had DD1 but spent most of it writing my PhD thesis. Currently unemployed, so indefinitely on leave. But I hope to find a job for the fall/winter and get at least 4months home with the LOs.
  • I should answer my own question! I'm a manager at a consulting firm, doing primarily strategy/marketing. In Canada, I'm entitled to 1 year of EI (employment insurance) paid by the gov, my company tops up so I get my full salary for 17 weeks. In total, I'm taking 6 months, planning to go back to work beginning of November.
  • I work as a zookeeper. I told them 10-12 weeks, but only 2 weeks were paid from what I had built up for vacation time. I think I will probably start back August 1st though, which will be just under 11 weeks. I would like to take the rest but we need the money and I have a couple days off later in August already for a wedding I am in. I am looking forward to working with my animals again, but this morning I was thinking I won't even be able to do his morning feed since he eats around 6am and I have to be there at 6:30. Just the idea of it makes me kind of anxious.

I was a restaurant mgr. This week I start working two shifts a week at another one of companies restaurant s as a waitress. I didn't want to go back to the crazy hours and never seeing my baby but this way I keep my foot in the door, get a chance to make a little "fun" money for DH and I and get to interact with other adults. After baby is a little older I will probably go back into management.
  • Donations Coordinator for a not for profit
I'm canadian so I'm entitled to and will be taking a full year

You mommas who are already back at work are strong !
  • Behavioral Therapist, working with children who have autism. I didn't have enough hours to qualify for FMLA, so I was unable to get 12wks off. However I took 8wks off all unpaid. It was going to be 6wks but I had a c section so my doc wrote me a note for 2 extra wks. I can't wait to start getting a paycheck again, I have bills to pay!
  • Special Ed. Teacher going back to work in September.
  • I am a teacher. I took 5 weeks of leave that I used sick time for. I am now off for the summer and go back at the end of August. In total, I'll have 14 weeks.

Booooooo on you for top up!
  • @florassecret‌ paying into EI as a self employed individual is a choice, I chose not too because at the time we had already been trying to get pregnant for a while and you have to be paying into EI for a full year before you can pull any money out, I had already miscarried and was worried about when I'd get my bfp. I ended up getting pregnant and delivery what would have been a year and two months after I lo
made the choice not to pay in. So in the end a silly choice. But Service Canada is not known for their flexibility...i would have been so upset if I had just missed the wire.

No they aren't flexible. I've heard of people not getting EI I over being 5 hours short. :(
  • I manage a production line for a major vehicle manufacturer. 13 weeks leave. I took a week before she was due off as vacation, she came a day before due date. 6 weeks paid, 6 weeks unpaid and we can choose to use all or some vacation for the unpaid part which I am taking some to help with the finances.

  • Teacher. Technically took 4 weeks (using my sick days to get to the end of the school year), but now I have the summer off as well, so it will be about 13 weeks total. I feel very fortunate!

    What kind of research?
  • @florassecret‌ your comment re top up made me LOL. I totally know what you mean, women actually try to get a job where I work specifically because of the awesome maternity top up benefit. It helps out so immensely.
  • Such a lovely perk @letal316 :) I wish my work would do that ... they would laugh in my face.
  • RN on a cardiac unit. I took all 12. Plus my boss gave me a few extra days
  • Process engineer for a chemical company that is very family oriented so they give 12 wks fully paid
  • Special ed teacher. Took 6 weeks at end of year using FMLA and vac/PTO time. But as of right now the plan is for me to stay home indefinitely. I feel very fortunate.

  • I managed a fitness studio. I had zero paid leave and will not be going back. I also teach ballet and fitness so I will be picking up classes instead of going back full time. Thinking about leaving her right now at 7 wks makes me cry. I am so grateful to be able to stay home!

I'm a teacher. I had 2 weeks paid by using my sick days. I go back in late August, so about 10 weeks total. I took a new job to work part-time this fall.
