Trouble TTC

Some results and a question (HSG)

Hi ladies! Happy Wednesday. Now that I got my most recent BFN, the testing can commence. I had my first labs drawn on Saturday and, shockingly, received the results already today. The nurse called to let me know that my thyroid, FSH, Glucose, etc. were all normal. What's that? Positive news? ;) Nice to hear that some things are, "normal".

Anyway, the next steps are my H's SA tomorrow, and my HSG which has now been scheduled for next Wednesday. My questions is: I was hoping to have the HSG done in the afternoon so I could work in the morning, but they scheduled me for a 7:30am arrival time. Since I've never had one done before, I don't know what to expect as far as work is concerned. Would you recommend I take the whole day off? A half day? Return to work immediately after? Thanks so much.

Re: Some results and a question (HSG)

  • *lurker coming out.. again*

I felt totally fine after the HSG, other than a light AF-like flow that lasted for several days. I had no cramping or anything. I would think you'll be fine to go right to work, or at most, take a half day. My HSG was awful (don't get scared.. I was a fluke with two totally blocked tubes and an overly zealous doc!) but I still was great as soon as it was over and even went shopping. Good luck! :)

I had a terrible HSG because my cervix wouldn't open, but as soon as it was over I was fine. Cramps a little later, but nothing more than typical period cramps. I also drove myself, I didn't return to work after, but I would have been ok.
  • I am the exception to the rule, as mine was pretty bad. The pain was like really, really intense cramps, which I handled fine. The real problem was how incredibly light-headed and dizzy I got afterward- I almost fainted in the hospital. I did need a driver for afterward, cause I would never have been able to drive myself home.

Anyway, the VAST majority of stories I have read are not like mine. Most likely you will be fine, just maybe have someone on speed dial who can pick you up if it's really bad for you.

  • I had my HSG last Wed. I will not lie, it was awful. I dont want to scare you about that though. Apparently, because I have one tube, that is why it was so terrible. I drove myself and took the whole day off work. I was glad I did b/c I did cramp afterward and was just plain miserable. Make sure you take a pad, unless you want the diaper like thing the hospital has. Take some aleve or something before hand. Again, I was told I am an exception not the norm when it comes to that test. I hope yours is completely painless.

    All Welcome

  • My HSG was done in early afternoon.  I popped two advil, went and had it done and was back at my desk working 1.5 hours later.  The catheter through the cervix was not the most pleasant thing, but it wasn't too awful.

I recommend bringing a pad of your own just in case you have some spotting.  I had a gush of the dye come back out a few hours later. Otherwise they'll give you the ones the size of a mattress to use. Wear old panties just in case.

I made arrangements to take the full day off, if needed (if not for the physical effect, then the possible emotional reaction if problems were found) but ended up going right to work.

For me the procedure was uncomfortable for sure, but not painful (I also didn't have any blockage) and it went pretty fast.

  • Yes, definitely not to scare you but it was pretty uncomfortable. My RE was also trying to get an outline of my fibroid that was on the outside on my uterus so he kept pressing more dye.....he kept saying tell me if you can't take anymore and I was trying really hard to be a big girl. I know I probably almost broke the nurse's hand (the nurse held my hand to comfort me). But I would definitely say keep breathing....when I realized I was holding my breathe it seemed like it felt worse. But the excitement of having my one tube open kind of made things okay. I will say this there isn't any lingering pain, once it was done I was fine.

  • Thank you all so much for your responses, tips, and experiences! Unfortunately, just to add to it, I was told today that I will need to take Prednisone at 7pm, 1am, and 7am (plus 50mg of Benedryl at this time, too) in addition to the already prescribed antibiotics, due to an Iodine allergy. SO...what I'm trying to say is I just went ahead and took the whole day off. There is no way I could work let alone function after that much Benedryl. True story. Although, maybe I should have said FORtunately. I may be loopy enough to relax. ;) Thanks again!

  • I have an allergy to iodine as well. Good call on taking off. After so many meds I went home and slept for the rest of the day.
