Ready for underwear while out yet?

Tomorrow will be day 3 of potty training and DS has done great (I think)! I sit him on the potty every hour, and he pees every hour. Our only accidents have been when I waited too long to get him on the potty. He's does not yet tell me when he has to go, though. At this point would you take him out in underwear and just make sure we still get to the potty in some way-whether at the store or keeping a potty in the car- or would you just stick him in a diaper until he has better control? I should mention, we're not PTing naked, he's been in underwear. He has a history of enjoying peeing on things when naked, so I didn't see that working too well. Think that has anything to do with him not recognizing "the urge?" I feel like wet underwear would still do the trick, but maybe there's something about it I just don't know.
