~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~

Welcome! This is a check-in for moms who are/were on a dairy free and/or soy free diet due to their LO's intolerance. The check-ins will be posted every Monday morning on the Breastfeeding board and XP'd to the Food Allergy board. If you'd like to join the group, just post an intro here and dive in! To check out the archive of our previous check-ins, please see the MSPI Moms Blog (www.mspimoms.blogspot.com).

1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?

2. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?

We are doing good. DD was sick last week; her only symptom was a high fever but her diapers also became green and mucousy. This began about 2 days after I tried to reintroduce almonds, so I'm thinking (hoping) the mucus was from her being sick and not the almonds. They seem to be back to normal now though and I plan to wait another week or so and try almonds again.

    2. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?

I think we might have a threshold issue with soy oil and soy lecithin, where she can tolerate it up until a certain amount. I really feel like DD's diapers weren't completely normal until I eliminated all traces of soy. I checked all medications, spices, contacted food companies etc to make sure I was eliminating everything. I had a major facepalm moment this weekend when I realized that the vegetable oil I cook with is soy oil. I still can't believe I didn't think of that. So apparently DD isn't as sensitive to soy oil as I thought. I'm guessing that maybe she can have small amounts of it, but when she gets a little here and there it all adds up and causes a reaction. I'm not sure the best way to manage this, continue to avoid all traces but maybe allow a little on occasion?

  • @SunshineLady6 Some of my staples are grilled chicken and vegetables, tacos with guacamole in place of cheese and sour cream, pasta with red sauce. I changed the tacos up this week and made carnitas. mspimama.com is a great resource for recipes. I've also recently found out that paleo recipes work as well. Since there seems to be a big paleo diet craze, I've found several recipes going that route.

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? Things are GOOD! I haven't had a good check-in for awhile so pretty excited. I'm dairy, soy, egg, nut, beef, corn and wheat free. I have found a routine with that and don't plan to switch it up any time soon! DD2 is doing well with the exception of teething. Finally, a typical ailment. :D

    2. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? I realized the hard way that Gatorade isn't on my safe list. I read the ingredients several times and didn't see an issue so I had been drinking it for a while as an alternative to all the water. What's weird is I never used to drink Gatorade before nursing. Anyways, after finally suspecting it and a Google search, I cut it out for 3 days and BAM! The best diapers I have seen since she was 3 weeks old (she's 4.5 months now). You'd think I would have suspected it sooner as it was one of the just a couple processed things in my diet. I am beyond excited.

  • @SunshineLady6 Welcome! Check out our archives for meal ideas. MSPI Mama is also on Pinterest and has tons of MSPI-friendly recipes pinned. Read every label on everything you eat. Here is a good list of hidden dairy ingredients: https://www.godairyfree.org/dairy-free-grocery-shopping-guide/dairy-ingredient-list-2

Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions.

@amichelle723DS has had mucous in his diapers due to a cold and teething, and I think they have turned green before due to a virus, so it could be that. FX for you! It does seem that many babies have a threshold for soy or dairy. So yes, I would think the trick would be figuring out where that threshold is. Maybe first see if you don't need to avoid soy oil at all, then try soy lecithin? That might be easier than trying a little soy here and there.

@RingOfFire11 Hooray!! I am so happy to hear you and your DD are doing so well. I know you've had a really tough time. I am excited for you too!  :D

  • Thanks @rocknrollfriend I think I'll try adding back in soybean oil and see if she does ok with that. Seems easier than trying to figure out her threshold amount.

  • Thanks @amichelle723 & @rocknrollfriend!

I'm hoping it's just milk, but have a feeling it's soy as well. Hey - maybe as an added benefit I'll lose some weight! :)

If you decide to cut soy, here's a good list of hidden soy ingredients: https://www.eatingwithfoodallergies.com/soyallergy.html

I did lose a lot of weight! Almost too much, actually. I also eat a lot healthier now than I did before. So there are a couple of silver linings. :)
