What will you have LO call your parents?

Re: What will you have LO call your parents?

  • DH's parents are both deceased. My parents are Grandma and Grandpa. I'm not into cute or clever nicknames. I get so annoyed when my parents' friends make it sound as though their grandkids love them more because they call them some cute little name like Ninny or Poppy. Bleh.

  • My mom and step-dad will be Oma / Opa. My dad will be Papaw. And my in-laws will be Grandma / Grandpa. My poor mom would lose it if we called her grandma, lol.

  • We refer to my parents as Grandma and Grandpa, but DD1 and my niece are both just starting to talk a lot so we will see what variation they end up with.

My in-laws flip back and forth between Grandma & Grandpa and Mamaw & Papaw, not sure why.

  • IL's are Mamaw and Papaw
My mom and her husband are Grandma and grandpa (though if it were up to me, he'd just be Marty).
The babysitter and her husband who we are very close to are Nana and pawpaw. Pawpaw's dad comes to visit sometimes and DD calls him Big PawPaw.
  • My mom will be called Babushka. MIL no clue - she keeps telling me that she's too young to be a grandma.. So who knows.

That One Gal From Alaska :)

  • Pop pop and mom mom on my parents side and Pop and mom mom on DH's side. She is the 5 th grandchild on my husband's side and the third on my side. So she doesn't get to choose, we will need to figure out a way to differentiate the mom mom s .
  • Oh, my mother wants to before called Grandma Princess. Nope. Not happening. We don't have princesses in this house. Nope.

Ha , to this day my own grandmother complains how I wouldn't call her gorgeous grandmother.

  • My parents are Gabby and Grandpa Paul...my niece and nephew came up with those ("Gabby" was a mispronunciation of I think "Grandmommy" or something). We will probably keep those for our LO. My ILs have been referring to themselves as Grammy and Grandpa, so we will try to go with those, too.

    Baby #2 due 4/26/16!

  • My parents wanted to go by G-Ma and G-Pa, but DS had other ideas. He calls my Dad "PaPa" and my Mom is "KyKy" (my moms name is Kyle). MIL goes by Grammy. I don't know why, but Grammy bothers me, but that's what she insisted on.
  • Im having a lot of difficulty with this ...my father suffers from severe peter pan syndrome and refuses to be called Grandpa....si I was like ok then what do you want to be called....hes like I don't know but not grandpa....well wtf am I supposed to do with that lol....so im stumped as to what to have my lil guy call him.....all other grandparents are just fine with being called just that so......fun times ahead

  • Lol my DH hates it that his mom choose nana bc it's so French Canadian (she was born and raised Slovak) and meanwhile my FIL went with Apa shortening Slovak apko. Wonder if LO will stick with nana or change it! Lol I just say whatever if it floats her boat then fine. My parents haven't even said anything so I'm just gonna call them the Croatian names for grandma and grandpa so there is no confusion lol

My FIL did this for quite a while. He insisted that he couldn't be a grandfather until he was 60 (too bad) and wanted to just be called Bruce. He makes his grandkids through his marriage to SMIL call him Bruce even though they've been married longer than most of the kids have been alive.

My H put his foot down and told him that if he didn't pick a "grandpa" name, we'd pick the cutesiest name possible for him. H did some research and picked "Ookie," which I think is Sweedish. FIL decided he could be Pappy pretty quickly after that.

  • My dad was called Papas and my mom is just called grandma by my brothers kids. My DH sister's kids call his mom and dad GuGu and Papa Steve. GuGu is just because their first grandchild couldn't say grandma at first and it stuck. I think sometimes it's just up to the kids on what they call their grandparents. I've heard G- Ma and Glam- ma if you want to feel younger? Not a big fan myself but what ever your for your parents and IL's.
  • We are sort of lucky in that we aren't having the first grand baby so everyone already has their names. My MIL apparently let the first grand baby pick her name. She is called MawMaw. My FIL is Papa. My mom is Grammy and her husband is GH. (My mom chose them) My dad is Poppop and his wife is Nonie. (My step-mom picked them) My niece and nephew have 8 grandparents so the names are a little tricky. It has taken me 5 years and I still don't have them down like I should. We always just called our grandparents grandma and grandpa. It was so much easier!
  • In my experience, the first grandchild names the grandparents. They don't always just say what we want!

  • We let the grandparents choose what they wanted to be called.  My in-laws will be Nanny and Grampie and my mom will be Gramma.  My SO calls his grandmother Nanny so she might be great-nanny to our little guy but I think G.G. or Gigi would be really cute for Great-Grandma:)

  • My parents will be Oma (German) and Papa
My inlaws already have a grandchild so although my mil was supposed to be grandma is she now "brammy" and my FIL is Pépère (French)

"Not Grandpa" for the win.  :)
  • my parents are
    Pepe and Grammy/Gram
my FIL is Grampy Quack Quack(he quacked a lot for my nephews growing up)
his wife hasn't decided on a name, my other niece and nephews never really called her anything but her name. but my daughter will definitely call her something other then Kathy
My MILis mam-ma and her Husband is Grampy Dan
  • My ILs had already claimed the standard Grandma & Grandpa since SIL had kids before us, so those stayed the same.

I asked my parents what they wanted to be called and my mom said "whatever is fine"... so I picked Grams b/c I thought it sounded cool. Lol..

My dad went with Opa after a friend of the family said it was the easiest grandparent name for LOs to say (and he is German so it's fitting). DD1 LOVES to say Opa! Definitely the first grandparent name she could say clearly :-)
